1: In what Woodland Community College officials call a “significant stride toward expanding educational opportunities,” a Memorandum of Understanding is in the works to achieve a “seamless academic transition” between the school and Chico State University. WCC Dr. Lizette Navarette recently announced the partnership that should take effect in the fall of 2024.
2: Last month, the Woodland Community & Senior Center hosted the city of Woodland Commission on Aging’s Annual Senior Resource Fair, which highlighted programs, services and products for adults 50 and older. More than 70 organizations ranging from Main Street staple Corner Drug Co. to Community Care Car, welcomed around 300 seniors inside the Senior Center basketball gym.
3: The No. 2 Woodland Christian baseball team traveled to Atherton to play against No. 1 seed Menlo at Silver Field. The Cardinals ultimately defeated the Knights 3-2 and won the Division V CIF NorCal Championships.
4: Last month, Woodland Community Services Parks and Recreation Department staff concluded its first-ever Recreation Leadership Development program, an eight-part educational series teaching high school and college students work-related topics such as job applications, interviews, event planning and learning about parks and recreation opportunities.
5: After a long five months, the Woodland Christian High School varsity football team officially received its championship rings after completing a storybook season back on Dec. 9 with a 23-13 victory against Banning in the CIF State Football Division 5-A championship.
6: After more than 40 years of dedicated service, Woodland High School teacher Jerry Delsol, a well-known and respected figure in agricultural education in Woodland Joint Unified School District, has announced his retirement.
7: After being forced to close its West Sacramento office due to a County Victims Services grant being eliminated in January, Empower Yolo and a cohort of several other victim services organizations held a final rally to push state legislators and Gov. Gavin Newsom to address severe budget cuts in Victims of Crime Act funding.
8: A mild summer night provided the perfect outdoor conditions Thursday evening as Pioneer High School celebrated the 2024 graduating class with its annual graduation ceremony. The light-hearted and fun ceremony featured eloquent speeches from students and staff, fantastic singing performances and loud hooting and hollering from the 1,500-plus family and friends who packed the school’s football stadium and perimeter to cheer on the nearly 400 soon-to-be graduates.
9: Woodland High School put the finishing touches on the Woodland Joint Unified School District’s graduation slate when they bid farewell to the Class of 2024 with its annual ceremony. The prompt and well-organized gathering, taking place in the evening for the second year in a row inside the school’s football stadium, featured fantastically written speeches from students and staff, singing performances, loud cheering and at one point, fireworks, as the thousands of family and friends in attendance cheered on the nearly 300 soon-to-be graduates.
10: Over Memorial Day Weekend, the Meals on Wheels Sutter Health Senior Nutrition Center in Winters suffered an estimated loss of over $10,000 of prepared frozen meals and perishable food inventory following a vandalism incident.
11: With cars periodically honking while driving by on Highway 113, Woodland Christian High School held its graduation ceremony on the gridiron this weekend after a historic year for athletics.
12: Three years after successfully launching the West Sacramento Mobile Farmers Market, the Center for Land-Based Learning launched its Woodland-based mobile market with a ribbon cutting, promising to connect communities with little access to fresh and local foods with the small farms that grow them.
13: Fifty decades of bringing democracy to Woodland residents was recognized by the City Council this week. In advance of its Golden Anniversary celebration, the Woodland League of Women Voters received a proclamation honoring the work it has done to keep people informed about candidates and public issues.
14: The Sierra Club and the Environmental Council of Sacramento have filed a lawsuit against Caltrans alleging legally inadequate environmental analysis of the Yolo 80 Corridor Improvements Project that would add two new lanes through Yolo County.
15: A proposed one-cent sales tax measure that would increase the city’s current tax rate by 12.5% will be discussed by the Woodland City Council during an upcoming meeting.
16: After nearly 40 years of dedicated service, Woodland High School agriculture teacher Eric Dyer, a well-known and respected figure in agricultural education in Woodland Joint Unified School District, has announced his retirement.
17: Earlier in the month, the Yolo County Board of Supervisors recognized Pride Month with their own resolution. Yolo County celebrates Pride Month each June to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, which served as a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history and ignited a global movement for civil rights.
18: Woodland was recently awarded a $163,146 grant from the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery to be used towards administering regulations imposed by Senate Bill 1383, also known as California’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy.
19: Industry and academic representatives came together recently when Woodland Community College hosted an “Ag Advisory.”
20: A proposed one-cent sales tax measure that would increase the city’s current tax rate by 12.5% will be discussed by the Woodland City Council during its upcoming meeting. The council will consider placing the tax measure on the ballot for the Nov. 5, 2024, general municipal election after receiving public comment and discussing the reasonableness of increasing taxes on a community already dealing with inflation, higher PG&E rates and general cost increases.
21: Carlos Dominguez, the former UC Davis student accused of killing two people and injuring a third in a violent string of stabbings last spring, will go on trial in April 2025. Following a brief conference earlier in the month, Judge Samuel McAdam announced the six-week jury trial for Dominguez would begin April 28, 2025.
22: Six members of the Woodland Christian boys basketball team received recognition from the Central Valley California League, including juniors Tanner Thomas and Ethan Johns, sophomores Romello Bruhn and Isaiah Hunt, head coach Casey Neimeyer and Armaan Hayer
23: The Woodland Police Department welcomed in two new employees and promoted another to sergeant during a swearing-in ceremony earlier this week. The ceremony inside the department’s community room at 1000 Lincoln Ave. featured dozens of family and friends along with a robust offering of past and present WPD employees in attendance to see Sgt. Evan Black’s promotion and Officer Bryce Cooper and Crime Prevention Specialist Marcela Vazquez be sworn in.
24: Six weeks after setting up camp on UC Davis’ quad in front of the Memorial Union, student protestors announced their choice to “decamp” following the rejection of a proposed agreement with the university by the UC Board of Regents and UC President Michael V. Drake.
25: A Yolo County League of Women Voters is being formed to increase voter information and participation countywide. Joining forces are the Woodland and Davis Area Leagues of Women Voters, the members of which voted to combine their efforts over the past two weeks.
26: As summer school programs begin and preparations for the opening of next school year are in full swing, progress continues at Woodland Joint Unified School District as construction kicked off this month on Measure Y school improvement projects. Woodland voters passed Measure Y in 2020 to improve schools and facilities.
27: Perfect weather conditions, great food and a bevy of updates on Woodland’s ascension to new levels were the main highlights of the Woodland Chamber of Commerce’s yearly State of the City Dinner at The Maples Wedding & Event Center, located at 40162 Best Ranch Road earlier in the month.
28: Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency’s Public Health Branch has confirmed that two residents who recently returned from international travel are infected with measles. According to a Yolo County press release, these are the 10th and 11th persons diagnosed with measles in California in 2024. The last measles case in Yolo County occurred in 2015.
29: Earlier in the month, the city celebrated its fourth annual Pride Parade along Main Street in downtown Woodland with a few hundred people in attendance showing that the event has been growing in popularity and awareness.
30: Albert Gallegos of West Sacramento has been appointed to the Yolo County Fair Board of Directors. The appointment was announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office earlier in the month.
