1: The Yolo County Board of Supervisors spent a chunk of time during a meeting earlier in the week discussing whether to amend a policy in order to name the board chambers in honor of Gary Sandy who unexpectedly passed away last year.
2: Earlier in the week, the Woodland Christian High School varsity baseball team held Senior Day to conclude the regular season against Lindhurst. The Cardinals beat the Blazers in five innings 16-1 on Tuesday at Joseph Trafican Memorial Field.
3: An eradication effort for bullfrogs and red-eared slider turtles began earlier in the month with a second capture effort planned for May, led by Endemic Environmental, a Yuba City-based company that helps nonprofits and others remove invasive species to increase biodiversity.
4: Early last week, members of the Woodland Police Department staff, including Chief Derrek Kaff, Deputy Chief Dallas Hyde and School Resource Officer Omar Flores, presented a donation check to Woodland High School math teacher Keith Hodges, the visionary behind the Dream Makers Farm Foundation.
5: The Woodland Community College Eagles of Excellence Awards fundraiser exceeded expectations, according to school officials. While the amounts are still being tabulated as of late last week, it appears the fundraiser netted in excess of $27,000, according to College President Dr. Lizette Navarette. The amount exceeded the goal of $25,000 set earlier by the Fund Committee of the College.
6: The Yolo County District Attorney has filed charges against a 34-year-old Woodland resident in relation to an incident that resulted in the death of a toddler. The resident was charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, one count of child endangerment and a case enhancement alleging that the crime involved great bodily harm and that the victim was particularly vulnerable.
7: Despite weather woes, thousands flooded into the Yolo County Fairgrounds over the weekend to attend this year’s California Honey Festival after it was forced to relocate there from its usual venue in downtown Woodland.
8: While baseball may be the main spring sport for high school boys in Woodland, the game of golf is quickly picking up steam in the City of Trees, as displayed by the Pioneer and Woodland Christian boys varsity golf teams, who each earned league titles earlier in the week.
9: Thanks to a phenomenal game from sophomore pitcher Aiden Lopez, the Woodland High School varsity baseball team defeated Union Mine in a sweat-free 7-1 game Tuesday evening, advancing them to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV quarterfinals.
10: Five days after falling one run short in a high-scoring, back-and-forth matchup in Fairfield, the Pioneer High School baseball team had a shot at redemption to begin the D3 CIF SJS Playoffs and did so after a 5-1 victory over Vanden.
11: Earlier this week during a regularly scheduled meeting, the Woodland Joint Unified School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to hold a special election in November to fill the vacant Area Two seat formerly held by Emily MacDonald.
12: Over 100 community members were in attendance at the Historical Society of Winter’s monument dedication. Generations of Japanese descendants whose ancestors once lived in Winters gathered at the community center to commemorate the lost Japanese community and Japantown, honoring their contributions to Winters and ensuring their story was not lost to history.
13: Earlier in the week, the Woodland Joint Unified School District recognized more than 550 students for their achievement toward becoming bilingual and bi-literate during a ceremony held at the Woodland High School stadium.
14: Holy Rosary Parish, demonstrating its commitment to Woodland’s future, announced that it would hold a groundbreaking and Mass in May as work begins on a new church. Once completed in 2025, this church will be the fifth since Holy Rosary Parish was founded in 1870, according to Father Jonathan Molina, the parish pastor.
15: As heavy fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants pushes over 110,000 people north to flee the violence in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, college students across the country have hunkered down in makeshift tent cities and demanded policy and investment changes to align with their beliefs. The UC Davis Popular University for the Liberation of Palestine (PULP) encampment was erected earlier in the month and was filled with roughly 200 people most of whom are students.
16: As part of its commitment to support the Yolo County Board of Supervisors in strengthening the community and advocating on behalf of residents, the Yolo County Administrator’s Office announced a series of strategic appointments that look to enhance services and operations in the areas of climate action and sustainability, communications, emergency services, personnel administration, policy development, procurement, contracts and budgeting
17: The Yolo County Retired Peace Officers Association held its annual memorial ceremony for fallen officers employed by various local law enforcement agencies. Upwards of 50 community members, elected officials, and those employed by local law enforcement agencies in and around Yolo County gathered to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice and died in the line of duty. The ceremony took place at the Peace Officers Memorial monument, located in front of the old historic courthouse at 725 Court St. in Woodland.
18: The good times flowed late last week as Soroptimist International of Woodland welcomed community members to downtown Woodland for the 8th Annual Woodland Winefest. Hundreds of thirsty patrons packed Heritage Plaza outside the Woodland Opera House to mingle, network and, of course, taste some of the finest wineries and breweries in the area.
19: For the first time in program history, the Woodland Christian High School varsity baseball team has clinched a berth into the Division VII CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship game. The No. 1 Cardinals (22-4) completed a sweep of No. 4 Turlock Christian (14-7) Wednesday night at Mark de la Motte Field.
20: For the second consecutive year, the Pioneer High School softball team’s season has come to an end on its home field in the quarterfinals of the Division III CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. The No. 3 Patriots (21-6) were defeated 5-2 by No. 6 Manteca
21: The Sutter High School varsity softball team is on its way to running the table with an unbeaten season and Woodland Christian was the latest team to try and end those hopes this week as the Cardinals lost 20-2 in the semifinals of the Division V CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs.
22: The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” along with a playlist of other groovy songs, were the soundtrack to the day as thousands of local residents and visitors packed downtown Main Street for the annual Woodland Street Cruisers Back to the Street Car Show.
23: The Yolo County Board of Supervisors has agreed to enter into a contract with El Dorado County for Secure Youth Treatment Facility services.
24: Woodland’s Measure R is expected to raise roughly $4.3 million this fiscal year, providing funds for general city services, programs and facilities. The Woodland City Council approved the spending plan for the ¼ cent sales tax measure that was approved by voters in 2020 and has an 8-year life span ending Sept. 30, 2030.
25: The Woodland City Council is poised to adopt a proclamation honoring Chicago Café as likely the oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in California and possibly even the United States
26: A Yolo Superior Court judge ruled that the Woodland teen who caused a three-car crash last year that killed two and injured at least 8 others will remain in custody until age 19. The teen, who was 13 at the time of the accident, caused a horrific and fiery multi-car accident on the intersection of Court and College Street that ultimately left Tina Vital, 43, and her 4-year-old granddaughter Adalina Lilah Perez dead.
27: For the second consecutive year, a Pioneer High School pole vaulter will be competing at the CIF State Track & Field Championships in Clovis. Senior Madeleine Juhler cleared 11 feet, 9 inches at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters meet.
28: The Woodland City Council adopted a resolution Tuesday approving the Southeast Area Aquatic Center project plans and specifications. The project has garnered support and opposition from community members, with some arguing that another swimming pool is needed and others worried about the high cost.
29: With a crisp breeze providing a reprieve from the usual graduation season heat, Woodland Community College welcomed all community members to its 16th annual Commencement Ceremony held in person on the campus courtyard.
30: American flags lined up and down Main Street, and the Woodland Cemetary served as the perfect visual for the American Legion Yolo Post 77 Memorial Day ceremony, focused on honoring those we’ve lost. Over 100 Woodland community members, veterans, and their families attended the Monday morning ceremony at the Woodland Cemetery.
31: No. 2 Woodland Christian (25-4) defeated No. 3 Ferndale (19-3-1) by a final score of 10-0 in five innings. With the dominant victory, the Cardinals advanced to the Division V CIF NorCal Championship game in the Bay Area.
