Meeting to focus on homelessness

The monthly Neighbors for Neighbors meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Capitola Library, 2005 Wharf Road, Capitola, focused on the topic of the criminalization of homelessness.

Expert panelists will include Don Lane, vice president of the Housing Matters board; Larry Imwalle, homelessness response manager for the city of Santa Cruz; Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley; Heather Rogers, Santa Cruz County public defender; and Collin Webb, Housing Now housing stabilization specialist at Housing Matters.

Update on local class of 1969 reunion

The committee organizing the Watsonville and Mora high schools class of 1969 reunion is hard at work and finalizing plans. The committee is asking all those who have not yet responded to your invitation to secure your reservation by sending a check now in the amount of $75 per person. If you are attending and would like to bring additional guests, notify the committee in advance and include them in your payment via check, Venmo or Zelle.

Breakfast at Market Street Senior Center

The Market Street Senior Center, 222 Market Street, Santa Cruz, will be hosting a monthly Sunday breakfast from 8-11 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month through the rest of the year. The next event will be Sept. 8.

Volunteers sought to write cards for seniors

With National Grandparents’ Day coming Sept. 8, the Family Service Agency of the Central Coast is seeking volunteers to write Thinking of You cards for seniors in assisted and skilled nursing facilities.

Residents in care facilities are often lonely and isolated and a card can brighten their day. Some additional suggestions to help with loneliness and isolation include crossword puzzles, word search books, adult coloring books and lap blankets. Donations are also welcome.

Cards and items can be dropped off at Family Service Agency/I-You Venture, 104 Walnut Ave, No. 208, Santa Cruz, or the Santa Cruz Volunteer Center, Attn: FSA/I-You Venture, 1740 17th Ave, Santa Cruz. Office hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

Volunteers needed to help adults learn English

In Santa Cruz County, nearly 23% of households struggle with basic English literacy. You can make a difference by becoming a volunteer literacy tutor. The Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County is hosting free 20-minute online orientations for those interested in learning more about becoming a tutor in its Adult Literacy Program. Discover how this rewarding opportunity helps individuals gain new skills, empowers families and strengthens our community.

Prostate Cancer Support Group meets Aug. 27

The Santa Cruz County Prostate Cancer Support Group will meet face-to-face as well as online from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dominican Wellness Center, 21340 E Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz.

Presentation to focus on Medicare Part D

Each year Medicare Part D prescription drug plans change. You may be able to find a less expensive plan each year, between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. Senior Network Services will host a free presentation giving step-by-step instructions on how to use the Medicare.gov website to find the best, and least expensive plan for the prescriptions you take. Bring your laptop or tablet and follow along on how to navigate the Medicare.gov website.

The presentations are at 1 p.m. Wednesday at London Nelson Community Center, 301 Center St., Santa Cruz and 10 a.m. Friday at Senior Network Services, 1777-A Capitola Rd. Santa Cruz.

Multicultural Fair gets new date on calendar

After the third annual Scotts Valley Multicultural Fair was postponed in May due to inclement weather, the event is back on the calendar. The community celebration will take place at 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 7 at Skypark, Kings Village Road, Scotts Valley.

The Scotts Valley Multicultural Fair is a free, interactive and educational event dedicated to building Community. Organized by the Scotts Valley Unified School District, the goal of the event is to broaden understanding and appreciation for multiculturalism and diversity. Through various activities and experiences, organizers hope to build community connection with the unique cultures and traditions present in Scotts Valley and the surrounding areas. Families will enjoy live music and multicultural performances throughout the day on the main stage, along with art, food and beverage vendors.
