A Detroiter is facing a criminal charge in Troy for allegedly stealing a dog and trying to resell it back to its owners.
Malik Deshawn Motley, 24, is facing one count of larceny-$1,000 to $20,000 — a felony.
According to the Troy Police Department, Motley is accused of claiming a French Bulldog named “Fats” who had wandered into a Troy resident’s yard recently, and then posting it for sale online.
The resident had reportedly found the dog in her backyard and then tried to find its owner by posting its photo on Facebook. Motley allegedly contacted the resident and provided “what appeared to be convincing photos and information” to persuade her that the dog was his, police said.
The rightful owners, who live nearby where Fats was found, also spotted the Facebook post later that day — but it was too late. Fats had already been turned over to Motley, police said. The owners tried to reach him but were unsuccessful, police said.
The owners subsequently spotted an online ad listing their dog for sale, so they arranged a meeting at DMC Children’s Hospital in Troy — under the guise of buying the dog. They told police about it too, and officers showed up and arrested Motley. Fats was safely reunited with its owners, police said.
Motley was arraigned on April 23 in 52-4 District Court, where bond was set at $15,000 cash/surety, with no 10% provision.
Held in the Oakland County Jail, his next court date is May 1.
Larceny of $1,000 to $20,000 is punishable by up to five years in prison and a hefty fine — with a larger penalty for repeat offenders.
