A Troy man was scammed out of $85,000 in cryptocurrency recently after responding to a cell phone message about resetting a password, police said.
According to the Troy Police Department, the man reported that he received the message stating that a request to set his Coinbase password had been initiated, and if he hadn’t made the request he was to call the number provided.
He did so — and then was tricked into transferring all the funds from his Coinbase wallet to another wallet which the scammer said was also operated by Coinbase.
But it wasn’t.
The man completed the transfer and lost all his funds, police said, before realizing he’d been duped.
Coinbase is a platform where users buy, sell, transfer and store cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and others.
Police have repeatedly warned residents to be wary when unconfirmed sources ask them to transfer funds.
“It is again very unfortunate to see another person fall for such a costly scam,” said Troy Police Lt. Benjamin Hancock. “People work hard for their money and to see them lose it all so quickly to a cryptocurrency scam is disappointing. We encourage everyone to really think twice before becoming another victim to such a costly scam.”
As previously reported, police say it’s unlikely such scammers will be caught and prosecuted.
