Drivers who regularly use M-59 in western Oakland County will likely face some delays as an $8 million pavement resurfacing project got underway Tuesday and is scheduled to run through the fall.
Crews will resurface 10 miles of M-59 between Milford Road in Highland Township and Pontiac Lake Road in White Lake Township, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. They will also replace guardrails, put down new pavement markings, and upgrade sidewalks.
As a result, a single lane will be closed during the construction work, which is expected to be finished in November.
Officials said the work will be done in both directions of the road and will start between Milford and Duck Lake roads. They said crews will tackle one-mile to two-mile segments at a time and move east through the summer and fall.
More than 15,000 vehicles travel the stretch of M-59 near Milford Road daily, according to the latest traffic counts by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. The volume more than doubles at Duck Lake Road, the agency said. It then dips to about 20,000 vehicles per day at Ormond Road in White Lake Township.
“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement.
“By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired, or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime.”
