Three people were taken into custody Wednesday evening after U.S. Postal Service letter carrier was robbed at gunpoint that morning, officials said.

The postal carrier was delivering mail in the 15800 block of Halsted Street at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday when an unidentified man approached, brandished a gun with a drum magazine and demanded money, according to a Harvey news release.

The man allegedly searched the letter carrier’s pockets before entering the nearby mail truck and taking two bins of packages and a backpack before leaving, police said.

U.S. postal inspectors were notified and began canvassing the area.

While on the scene, police said the inspectors heard gunshots and pursued three people, following them to a residence at 620 East 157th Place.

The inspectors searched the home and, with the assistance of Harvey police, detained three individuals and recovered the stolen mail, police said.

Officers also seized two firearms, they said.

Police said that the three suspects were taken into custody at the Harvey Police Department, though their identities and the charges they will face have not yet been disclosed.
