A woman was injured by a falling tree in St. Paul’s Mears Park on Friday night during a Lowertown block party.

Shortly before 6:40 p.m., a mature tree fell and injured the woman, according to Alyssa Arcand, a St. Paul Police Department spokesperson. The woman was conscious and breathing. Officers working at the park called for fire medics, who took the woman to Regions Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The Downtown Block Party, hosted by St. Paul Parks and Recreation, paused the live band, Milk, which did not return for its second set, and the event concluded for the night at 8 p.m. as scheduled.

Witnesses said the tree landed in the newly planted gardens at the park tended and maintained by Lowertown residents.

Winds at St. Paul Downtown Airport on Friday night were less than 10 mph.

A large tree fell in Mears Park nearly two years ago just before the Twin Cities Jazz Festival was scheduled at the park. Nobody was injured.

The character of the once heavily shaded park has been changed after toppled trees and the removal of numerous other trees due to age or emerald ash borer infestation.
