A shootout at a busy St. Paul intersection this week led to an attempted murder charge against the man who was injured.

Officers responded about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday to a shooting at White Bear and Maryland avenues. They found Rashaan Vonzell Osler, 25, at a nearby address on Rose Avenue. He had a gunshot wound to the upper back.

Osler, of Minneapolis, said he didn’t know who shot him and stated, “Just take me to the hospital,” according to the criminal complaint filed against him.

Surveillance video showed Osler standing at a bus stop in conversation with a man wearing yellow shorts. Another man stood by the passenger side of a sport utility vehicle. Osler drew a handgun and fired several times at the man in the yellow shorts, the complaint said.

The man in the shorts and the other man got into the SUV, and a passenger fired at Osler from the window. Osler fled on Maryland Avenue with the SUV chasing him.

Surveillance video showed Osler fired four times at the man at close range, and 14 shots rang out when Osler fled, according to the complaint.

There were various witnesses, including a man driving on Maryland Avenue who said a male ran up and tried to open one of his vehicle’s doors, but it was locked and he couldn’t get in. He heard loud pops, saw a vehicle slow down and someone shot at the male who had tried to enter his vehicle. He later found two bullet holes in his vehicle.

At the hospital, Osler told police he didn’t know who shot him, where the shots came from or why anyone would shoot him. When police told him a firearm had been found in an area he passed through, he said he hadn’t had or fired a gun.

Due to a conviction for selling methamphetamine in Rogers in 2019, Osler is ineligible to possess firearms or ammunition, the complaint said. In addition to attempted murder, the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office charged him with possession of a firearm by a person ineligible due to a crime of violence.

An attorney was recently appointed to Osler and didn’t have a comment Friday afternoon.
