Two forums are being offered to discuss health issues with East Chicago residents.

An East Chicago Community Advisory Group is having a forum Saturday with a health expert who specializes in exposure to environmental toxins, and the following week, the EPA will hold an open house where residents can hear a presentation from a health expert and get updates on the cleanup and excavation at the U.S.S. Lead Superfund site.

Dr. Bruce Lanphear, a professor of health sciences at Simon Fraser University, will meet with the East Chicago Community Advisory Group, a collective of residents who live around the U.S.S. Lead Superfund site, from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the East Chicago Public Library, 1008 W. Chicago Ave.

The group, dubbed East Chicago, Calumet Coalition by its members, is an advocacy and outreach group that works with the EPA to provide residents around the U.S.S. Lead Superfund site with information regarding cleanup, health care and property issues.

At the EPA's forum from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 at Carrie Gosch School, Dr. Susan Buchanan, of the University of Illinois at Chicago's Great Lakes Center for Children's Environmental Health, will talk about lead contamination and health. The EPA also will debrief residents on cleanup work at the site.
