The Woodland Christian girls varsity basketball team kicked off the second round of Sierra Delta League action in a very similar fashion to the first round of play by defeating Vacaville Christian 64-22 at home Monday night.
“We had a slower start to this game than we’ve been having and ended the first quarter up 10-8,” Cardinals head coach Shiloh Sorbello recalled. “However, we pulled away with a dominant second quarter (20-2) and third quarter (23-4) to cruise to a 64-22 win.”
The Cardinals outrebounded the Falcons 38-27, outshot them 74-33, and made a higher percentage of those shots, 43%, compared to 33% for the Falcons.
After the slow first quarter, senior point guard Keziah Maldonado-Lemus jumpstarted the Cardinals in the second quarter, finishing with 10 points en route to her 12 on the night. She added a game-high 6 steals, 7 rebounds and 8 assists with just one turnover.
Sophomore Elena Ganyo had an outstanding game. She came alive in the third quarter, scoring 8 points and totaling a game-high 15 on the night. She also tied with Maldonado-Lemus with 6 steals and 7 rebounds.Junior Ellie Sumner played her typical suffocating defense and finished with 4 steals. Sorbello said her work containing the other team’s leading scorer (Elena Vizcay) was invaluable.
Sophomore Siena Sorbello chipped in 12 points and a game-high 9 rebounds, while Bailee Broward had 9 points and 8 boards.
Up next for the Cardinals will be a road trip to Lindhurst, a team they defeated 48-22 in their first meeting.
“We are looking forward to a road game at Lindhurst on Wednesday and expect it to be a quality game for us,” Sorbello said. “Lindhurst beat Rio Vista tonight to seize control of second place in league, so we will need to come out strong to make sure we don’t give them any momentum on their home court.”
