Kenyan Beatrice Chebet set a world record in the 5,000 meters, winning the event in 13 minutes, 58.06 seconds Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore.

Chebet became the first woman to run under 14 minutes in the event, surpassing the previous record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay. Tsegay set the record at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic.

Kenyan Faith Kipyegon also set a world record, in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 3 minutes, 48.68 seconds.

Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion in the event, bested her own record of 3:49.04 in the event, set last July before the Paris Games.

Chebet, 25 was the gold medalist in the 5,000 and 10,000 at the Paris Olympics, becoming just the third woman to win both.

Chebet had the previous world best this year in the event, running 14:06.39 last month in Rome.

CYCLING

Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage of the Tour de France in a sprint to the line and defending champion Tadej Pogacar finished safely.

Pogacar is looking to win the showcase race for a fourth time on the back of great form this season.

Stage 1 took riders 115 miles in and around the northern city of Lille.

Philipsen’s Alpecin-Deceuninck teammate Mathieu van der Poel put him in a great position to pull clear in the last 100 meters and win by a clear margin for his 10th Tour stage win.

Philipsen gets to wear the cherished yellow jersey for the first time, for one day at least.

Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay was second and Norwegian Søren Wærenskjold third.

Pogacar and two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark were in the front group — finishing 18th and 20th, respectively — but did not contest the sprint. All finished in 3 hours, 53 minutes.

GOLF

Davis Thompson made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to break out of a logjam that at one point featured 10 players tied for the lead, giving him a 4-under 67 on a much tougher course and a one-shot lead in the John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill.

Thompson was among five players tied for the lead when he stood over his final putt, after Brian Campbell had just holed a 30-foot birdie putt.

His final birdie put him at 15-under 198, one shot ahead of Campbell, Max Homa, Emiliano Grillo and David Lipsky, each of whom shot 68.

About the only player not in the mix was 36-hole leader Doug Ghim, who played his last 10 holes with two bogeys and no birdies and shot 74, pushing him outside the top 20.

Thompson had a birdie-birdie finish, though he missed an 8-foot eagle attempt on the par-5 17th hole. He will try to become the first player to win back-to-back at the John Deere Classic since Steve Stricker won three in a row from 2009 through 2011.

Also at stake for Thompson is a chance to get into the British Open — a victory would move him to the top of the alternate list determined by the next world ranking.

Camilo Villegas (69) and Austin Eckroat (67) were among four players three shots behind. Matt Kuchar (67) and Auburn junior Jackson Koivun were in the group four back. Thirteen players were within four shots of the lead.

Of the top 14 players, only Lipsky, Koivun and Kevin Roy have yet to win on the PGA Tour. Homa is the most proven of the lot, though he has been trying to pull himself out of a deep slump that has left him on the outside of just trying to make the PGA Tour playoffs this year.

Daniel Brown shot a second straight 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the BMW International Open in Munich on the European tour.

Brown was on 16-under 200 and his closest challenger was fellow Englishman Jordan Smith, who shot 66. Joost Luiten of the Netherlands (65) was a further two shots back.

WNBA

Caitlin Clark missed her fifth consecutive game with a strained left groin for the Indiana Fever when they played the Sparks on Saturday night in Indianapolis.

The Fever announced Clark’s status on Friday. Clark’s most recent absence previously came Thursday night when she sat out Indiana’s 81-54 win over Las Vegas as the Fever snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Aces.

Clark, the first overall pick in the 2024 draft and one of the two captains selected for the WNBA All-Star Game later this month, never missed a game in college at Iowa or with the Fever as a rookie. A strained quadriceps earlier this season kept her out for five games.

SOCCER

Joseph Paintsil had two goals, Matheus Nascimento also scored a goal and the Galaxy beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 late Friday night to snap a three-game winless streak.

The Galaxy (2-13-6), the defending MLS Cup champions, won for the first time since beating Real Salt Lake 2-0 on May 31 to snap a 16-game winless streak to open the season. The Galaxy went into the game with 13 points, fewest in all of MLS.

The Whitecaps (11-4-5) have lost three of their last four. Vancouver is second in the Western Conference with 38 points, behind San Diego (39).

Edwin Cerrillo flicked a shot from 30 yards out that was deflected by keeper Yohei Takaoka and Nascimento put away the rebound with a first-touch finish to open the scoring in the second minute.

Paintsil made it 2-0 in the 60th. Gabriel Pec played an long arcing ball to the top of the penalty box, where Marco Reus tapped a first-touch pass to a wide-open Paintsil, who calmly flicked a shot inside the back post from the left side of the area.

Paintsil converted from the penalty spot in the 77th minute for his first career multi-goal game. The 27-year-old forward has three goals and one assist this season after he finished with 10 goals and 10 assists last season, his first in MLS.

Takaoka had five saves for Vancouver. Jayden Nelson was shown a yellow card in the 55th minute and another in stoppage time as the Whitecaps played a man down for the final few minutes.
