Ceddanne Rafaela homered, Walker Buehler earned his first road victory since April 26, and the visiting Boston Red Sox routed the Washington Nationals 10-3 to earn the 10,000th victory in franchise history Saturday.
Romy Gonzalez had three hits for Boston (45-45), which has won five of seven. The Red Sox are the second American League franchise to reach 10,000 wins, joining the New York Yankees.
The Nationals fell to 18-27 at home, the third-worst record in the majors behind Colorado and the Athletics.
Just as they did in Friday’s 11-2 victory over Washington, the Red Sox broke it open with a seven-run inning. Roman Anthony made it 3-0 in the third with an RBI single, and four batters later Jarren Duran hit a two-run triple.
Nationals starter Mitchell Parker (5-9) misplayed Abraham Toro’s grounder to allow Duran to score, and Rafaela hit the next pitch into the seats in left field to make it 8-0. Gonzalez tacked on a two-out RBI single to finish the outburst.
Buehler (6-6), who pitched his first seven MLB seasons with the Dodgers, allowed three runs — two earned — in five-plus innings. He improved to 3-1 with a 2.67 ERA in six lifetime appearances against Washington.
PHILLIES defeat REDS, LODOLO
Alec Bohm and Kyle Schwarber each hit two-run homers and Edmundo Sosa added a solo shot to lift the host Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Phillies left-handed starter Ranger Suárez was pulled by manager Rob Thomson after throwing just 80 pitches in five innings. He struck out six and lowered his ERA to 1.99.
Suárez allowed seven earned runs in his first start of the season, and has now allowed only 11 over his last 11 starts. The circumstances of his early exit were not immediately known, Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six innings in all but his first start of the year.
Bohm hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning off Reds starter Nick Lodolo (5-6) for a 3-1 lead and Schwarber connected on his 27th homer of the year in the eighth to make it 5-1.
Will Benson hit a solo homer off Suárez for the Reds in the fifth, and Sosa followed with a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning off Lodolo to make it 1-1.
Lodolo, out of Damien High School, struck out eight and allowed three runs over six innings.
SHEEHAN GETs START
Right-hander Emmet Sheehan will be recalled from Oklahoma City to fill the Dodgers’ vacant starting spot today against the Houston Astros.
Sheehan made a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery when he gave up one run over four innings with six strikeouts June 18 against the Padres in an eventual 4-3 victory. But he was optioned one day later.
He had two starts after going back to Triple-A, going six perfect innings against Sacramento on June 25 before he gave up four runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings at Las Vegas on Tuesday.
FORMER ALL-STAR CLOSER JENKS DIES
Bobby Jenks, a two-time All-Star closer and World Series champion with the Chicago White Sox, has died. He was 44.
The White Sox said Jenks died Friday in Sintra, Portugal, where he was being treated for adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer.
Jenks helped the White Sox win the 2005 World Series, saving four games in six appearances during the postseason. He was an All-Star in each of the next two seasons while saving 41 games in 2006 and 40 in 2007.
He retired 41 consecutive batters in 2007, matching a record for a reliever.
“He was embarrassing guys, good hitters, right away,” former White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said in a video tribute.
Jenks saved 173 games for the White Sox from 2005-10 before finishing his career with 19 appearances in 2011 for the Boston Red Sox. For his career, he was 16-20 with a 3.53 ERA and 351 strikeouts in 348 appearances, all in relief.
“He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend and teammate,” White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.”
Jenks is survived by his wife, Eleni Tzitzivacos, their two children, Zeno and Kate, and his four children from a prior marriage, Cuma, Nolan, Rylan and Jackson.
PERFECT evening
Khristian Curtis and relievers Jake Shirk and Michael Walsh combined for the first perfect game in an affiliated minor league since 2017, leading the Greensboro Grasshoppers to a 2-0 victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Friday night.
The Grasshoppers are a Pittsburgh Pirates farm team in the High-A South Atlantic League. The Ironbirds are a Baltimore affiliate.
Curtis struck out 10 in six innings, Shirk fanned four more in two innings and Walsh added two in the ninth — the last against Cole Urman for the final out.
