Forward Javan Johnson had 27 points and five rebounds, and the Santa Cruz Warriors rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat Rio Grande Valley, 106-103, at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas, on Saturday night.

Forward Kevin Knox II had 25 points and seven rebounds for the Warriors (2-0). Center Seth Maxwell secured his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Yuri Collins had five points and 12 assists.

Two-way forward N’Faly Dante led Rio Grande Valley (0-2) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Two-way forward Jack McVeigh had 20 points and nine rebounds, and guard Markquis Nowell finished with 17 points and eight assists. Two-way guard Nate Williams Jr. and forward Jermaine Samuels Jr. scored 11 points each.

Santa Cruz continues its seven-game road trip at Sioux Falls (0-0) on Friday at 5 p.m.

Men’s basketball

UC Santa Cruz 81, at Pacific Lutheran 79 >> Andrew Ferrara-Jones made a 3-pointer with 1:24 left, and the Banana Slugs didn’t allow a point the rest of the way to secure the win Saturday.

Zino Okah and Ferrara-Jones each finished with 16 points for the Banana Slugs (8-7), who rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half.

Caden Breznikar had 14 points and three steals in 25 minutes off the bench, and Joseph Espy had 13 points and five rebounds.

Dom Perasso had 16 points and five rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench for the Lutes (3-6). Ben Tellez and Emmett Holt each scored 13 points, and Miles Nash had 11 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals.

UCSC plays at Puget Sound (5-3) in Tacoma, Washington, on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Women’s basketball

At Cabrillo 46, Bakersfield 23 >> Sophomore forward Renee Parker scored a game-high 12 points, and the Seahawks earned the nonconference win Saturday.

The Seahawks (11-4) outscored the Renegades 8-0 in the first quarter and led 18-5 at the half.

Freshman forward Gabby Brooks scored 11 points for Cabrillo, and freshman guard Faith Esquer scored nine points.

Freshman guard/forward Jocelyn Pope scored eight points for the Renegades (4-8).

Cabrilo hosts Shasta (8-8) on Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Boys soccer

Woodrow Wilson 4, Aptos 2 >> Julian Torres headed in a cross by Nicolas Topete in the 10th minute, but the Bruins scored three unanswered goals to prevail in the SoCal Classic’s Elite Division semifinals at Oceanside High on Saturday.

The teams were tied 1-all at the half.

Damian Garcia finished off a cross from Nami Banks in the 65th minute to narrow the Mariners’ deficit to 3-2, but the Bruins (4-3-2) of Long Beach tacked on a late goal for the final score.

“Commendable effort for the entire team but it was a good learning experience and growth for the entire team,” Mariners coach Roberto Zuniga said.

Goalie Noah Curran made four saves for the Mariners (5-2-1), who face Bishop Mora Salesian (5-6-1) of Los Angeles for third place in the Elite Division at Oceanside High on Monday at 8 a.m.
