(Team records through Sunday.)
1. BISHOP AMAT (11-1-2)
The Lancers, who have several MLS Next Academy players, are off to a great start and could be in the CIF Southern Section Open or Division 1 playoffs. Junior Jancarlo Hernandez leads the team with six goals. They won the Sierra Vista/Baldwin Park tournament and have tests this week against Covina and Walnut.
2. PASADENA (9-0)
The Bulldogs are off to a blistering start, having outscored their opponents 38-4. They had a 5-0 shutout of California to win the Condors’ tournament championship over the weekend. They have shutouts in five of their last six games and David Vieyra leads the team with eight goals.
3. BONITA (6-1)
The Bearcats have notable wins over Upland (2-1) and Alta Loma (2-0) and opened the Palomares League with a 3-0 victory over Diamond Bar. Their defense has allowed just three goals through seven games, but the bigger tests lie ahead.
4. WALNUT (6-1-2)
The Mustangs have a senior-heavy team that hopes to challenge for the Palomares League title. They got off to a rough start in league with a 2-0 loss to Claremont. They should benefit from some players getting healthy near the start of the new year. They have a showdown with Bishop Amat on Thursday. Oscar Feria leads with six goals.
5. EDGEWOOD (5-0-2)
The Lions opened eyes with a surprising 0-0 tie against Bishop Amat and remain undefeated, having also notched a 1-1 tie against South Hills. Junior Abraham Zazueta leads with four goals.
6. ARROYO (9-2)
The Mission Valley League will be tough again with Arroyo, South El Monte and El Monte the likely top teams. The Knights are already 4-0 in league play, but games against Marshall and South El Monte come next week.
7. COVINA (4-1-2)
The Colts won the CIF-SS Division 7 title last season and are off to a solid start. Wins over Baldwin Park, Damien and a tie against Sierra Vista show the program’s growth. They have a game against Bishop Amat this week.
8. NOGALES (6-1-1)
The Nobles notched a solid 2-0 win over El Rancho and have five games where they scored three or more goals. They lost 2-0 to Ayala and will be tested in the Montview League, which includes Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista.
9. ST. FRANCIS (4-2-3)
The Golden Knights were off to a 4-0-1 start before going winless over their past four games. They struggled against tough opponents and had losses to Trabuco Hills (3-1) and Mira Costa (2-1). They play in the extremely tough Mission League.
10. SOUTH EL MONTE (8-4-2)
The Eagles had good wins over Sierra Vista, Covina and Schurr early in the season, but have started 1-2 in the Mission Valley League. They had a 3-2 loss to Mountain View in league. It should be a wild ride to the finish in the Mission Valley League.
