Voters handed the Hammond School Board a makeover Tuesday. In unofficial totals, two new at-large board members will join the five-member board next year.

Newcomers Mellissa Guerra and Evangeline Stanford led the vote totals, while incumbent Cindy Murphy trailed the six-person race. Another at-large incumbent, Manny Candelaria Jr., didn’t run for reelection.

The School City of Hammond, the largest district in Northwest Indiana, has been steeped in division and controversy in the past two years leading to the resignation earlier this year of Superintendent Scott Miller.

He faced criticism over last year’s failed referendum votes that triggered hundreds of layoffs and the closing of three elementary schools.

Selecting a new superintendent will be one of the revamped board’s priorities. The district is led by interim Superintendent Brent A. Wilson.

East Chicago: Jesse Gomez, Maria Mercedez Mena-Taylor, both at-large.

Griffith: Emily Conner, Jason A. Jaques, both at-large.

Hanover Central: Tracy Lee Haskell, at-large; Tara Beilke, District 1; Scott Burdan, District 2.

Highland: Rick Alyea, Patrick Krull, both at-large.

Hobart: Bradley L. Keehn Jr., David Kostbade, Francisco Porras, all at-large.

Lake Central: Janice Malchow, at-large; Louise Tallent, Dyer; Cynthia Sues, St. John.

Lake Ridge: District 1: no candidate; David Bacon, District 2; Kenneth Buckley, District 3.
