OAKLAND >> A two-vehicle collision in West Oakland Wednesday evening left an 83-year-old man dead and police seeking a driver who fled the scene, authorities said.

The name of the man killed, an Oakland resident, has not yet been released pending notification of his family.

The collision happened about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday near 14th and Poplar streets.

Police said the man killed was driving a 1996 Saturn SL eastbound in the 1300 block of 14th Street and attempted to make a northbound turn onto Poplar Street.

As he was making the turn, his vehicle was hit broadside by a 2013 Audi Q5 that was going westbound on 14th Street and at unknown speed, police said. The impact caused the Saturn to be pushed onto the curb and against a fence.

The 83-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Audi fled on foot. A detailed description of the Audi driver was not released.

Police said it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol was a factor in the collision, which remains under investigation.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the Audi driver. Anyone with information may call police traffic investigators at 510-777-8570 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
