OAKLAND >> A woman was found dead early Thursday at a large East Oakland homeless encampment, and police said it appears foul play is involved.

Police still were trying to identify the woman, who they said had suffered trauma to her head. They are investigating the case as a homicide.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of East 12th Street about 6:40 a.m., and the woman was down in the roadway. Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police said the woman had contacts within the homeless camp but did not live there.

An autopsy by the Alameda County coroner’s office will try to determine the exact cause of death.

The woman’s death is the 75th homicide investigated by the Oakland Police Department in 2022. The California Highway Patrol has investigated four freeway homicides within city limits. Last year at this time, Oakland police had investigated 80 homicides in the city.

The homeless camp where the woman was found stretches for several blocks on East 12th Street, and it has been the site of previous fatal shootings and homicides.
