After a week of warm, almost spring-like weather, a winter storm rolled into Boulder County on Tuesday, bringing freezing temperatures and significant snowfall from Tuesday night through most of the day Wednesday.

According to Victoria Chavez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder, the total snow accumulation as of 5 p.m. Wednesday had reached 8.3 inches at the NWS office, 325 Broadway.

Further east, in Longmont, Chavez estimated a total snowfall of 2 to 3 inches in Longmont as of 8 p.m. In Niwot, snow accumulation near Colo. 119 and Niwot Road totaled 3.8 inches as of 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Chavez said the snow should be “tapering off” with little to no accumulation in Boulder County throughout the rest of the night.

Temperatures are expected to drop down into single digits Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with overnight lows reaching 2 degrees in Boulder and 2 to 3 degrees in Longmont, according to Chavez. Thursday’s highs in Boulder and Longmont are forecasted to be in the low 30s, although wind chills may dip well below zero in Boulder.

“Tomorrow, it’ll dry out. The sun will come back out and we’ll start to warm up a little bit,” said Russell Danielson, another meteorologist from NWS Boulder.

Travel conditions are also expected to improve by Thursday morning.“The main roads should be totally fine. It’s the side roads that may still have issues tomorrow morning,” Danielson said.

From Friday through the weekend, the weather is expected to get much warmer, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
