1. LA MIRADA (13-3)

The Matadores have won eight straight and crushed Downey 8-0 to open the Gateway League. They continue league play this week against Gahr (today) and Downey (Thursday).

2. WHITTIER CHRISTIAN (14-4)

The Heralds flexed their muscles by beating Village Christian 17-2 and following with a 19-0 win over Maranatha. They have won nine straight and have belted 14 home runs as a team.

3. CHARTER OAK (6-0)

The Chargers remained undefeated with a 9-2 victory over San Dimas. They appear to be head and shoulders above their opponents in the Valle Vista League. Unless they add tougher nonleague games to their schedule, they could run the table in league and head to the playoffs undefeated.

4. SONORA (12-2)

The Raiders beat Villa Park to move to 1-1 in the Freeway League. They also had a nonleague win, 3-1, over Yorba Linda. Bayle Hunnicutt is 8-2 with a 2.36 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 65 innings.

5. SOUTH HILLS (8-4-1)

Mikayla Sta. Ana was 3 for 4 with two RBIs in a nonleague victory, 6-2, over Beaumont. The Huskies travel to Los Altos on Wednesday for their Hacienda League opener. Those two teams fit the description of league favorites.

6. GANESHA (12-4-1)

The Giants have won their past four Miramonte League games by a combined score of 81-0. They’re simply overpowering. The Giants are trending toward being in the Division 1 playoffs while beating teams in their league that figure to be in the lowest playoff divisions.

7. LA HABRA (12-6)

The Highlanders are 3-0 in the Freeway League after wins over El Dorado (6-5) and Sunny Hills (12-0). Perhaps more impressive was a close loss, 4-2, to SGV No. 1 La Mirada.

8. CALIFORNIA (8-6)

The Condors have struggled away from the Del Rio League, losing a nonleague game to Gahr, 5-4, for their fifth loss of the season. But in league they’re 3-0 and have games this week against Whittier, Santa Fe and El Rancho.

9. BONITA (11-5)

The Bearcats have bounced back since a 6-1 loss to Ayala. They are 5-1 in the Palomares League, which includes a 10-0 win over Diamond Bar and 11-4 victory over Claremont.

10. LOS ALTOS (10-5)

The Conquerors closed last week with a 3-0 win over Tesoro and 14-2 win over San Juan Hills. They won the Hacienda League last year and begin league play with Wednesday’s showdown at home against South Hills.
