A Sierra Madre midcentury modern home with a distinctive facade recently hit the market for $1.985 million.
Completed in 1961, the single-level house by the modernist firm Smith, Powell and Morgridge stands out on the wooded hillside with its sharp angled roof, walls and protruding windows. It spans 2,496 square feet and includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a living room with a suspended fireplace.
Glass walls flood the main living and dining space with natural light and offer views of the surrounding treetops, the valley and mountains.
“Offering privacy, incredible views and dramatic design at every turn, this landmark mid-century modern home is a true work of art,” the listing said.
Records show a couple bought the property in November 2020 for $1.37 million.
The house, built elevated off the ground, sits at the end of a long, gated driveway on more than a third of an acre.
There’s a main living space with room for dining. A breakfast bar with pass-through windows separate the dining area from the kitchen. Another pass-through window over the stove opens to the den with its built-in shelves and cabinets.
One of the three bedrooms features a stone fireplace flanked by large picture windows and direct outside access.
Decks, gardens and an in-ground spa surround the house.
A separate workshop, storage and a multi-zone HVAC are added features.
The listing agents are Laura Martinez and Rob Kallick of Compass.
Smith, Powell and Morgridge was the Los Angeles-based partnership of architects Whitney Smith, Herbert Powell and Howard Morgridge. From 1955 to 1965, the firm’s portfolio included houses, schools and civic buildings.
