SANTA CRUZ >> A monthslong effort to repave four miles of Highway 1 near Aptos will commence Sunday, forcing parts of Highway 1 and adjacent ramps to shutter overnight, according to a release from Caltrans.

The pavement improvement effort will extend from almost 1 mile north of the Buena Vista Bridge to the Rio Del Mar Bridge in Aptos.

Sunday closures, beginning this Sunday night according to Caltrans, will last from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and involves closing a single lane of northbound Highway 1. Similarly, a single northbound lane will be closed from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

On the other side of the highway, a single southbound lane may be closed overnight from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sundays and from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Intermittent overnight closures of ramps within the construction zone might also occur temporarily.

Northbound Highway 1 ramps may also close Sundays from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., according to the release, as well as 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Southbound ramps may close Sundays from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. as well as 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

No ramp or lane closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. on Friday to 9 p.m. Sunday, Caltrans noted.

The $5.7 million project, spearheaded by Watsonville-based Granite Rock Construction, is expected to be completed by Oct. 31 and updates on specific lane and ramp closures will be provided as the construction effort continues, according to the release.

A Caltrans spokesperson confirmed that this closure schedule has been planned to continue through the estimated October completion date.

Travelers have been advised to expected delays of about 10 minutes or less.

Highway 9

A section of Highway 9 near Santa Cruz has also been scheduled for a full overnight closure for two days next week so that construction crews can continue an effort to restore a failed slope along the highway, according to a release from Caltrans.Beginning at 8 p.m. Monday and extending through 6 a.m. Tuesday, Highway 9 will be closed 1 mile north of where it intersects with Highway 1 and a half-mile north of Vernon Street. The same hours and location of the closure will happen again Tuesday and extend into the early Wednesday morning hours, according to the release.

Another overnight closure at a separate section of Highway 9 has been set to begin at 8 p.m. Wednesday and last through 6 a.m. Thursday. This closure is located at the Sidehill Viaduct in Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park and about 0.75 miles south of Glengarry Road, according to the release.

A detour for the closures will be available through Graham Hill Road with message and directional signs propped up to guide commuters. Travelers can expect a roughly 15-minute travel delay.

Project construction is estimated to be finished by Wednesday, Caltrans noted in the release, though there is potential for a single-day closure extension through Thursday.

The project will cost $6.95 million and the contractor is Gordon N Ball Inc. of Alamo, California.
