A 23-year-old Oakland County man is in trouble with Shelby Township police after he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and drunk driving.
Anthony Averiette out of Farmington was arraigned on June 13 in 41A District Court on charges of concealing possession of a firearm and operating while intoxicated. He is free after posting a $50,000 bond.
In a news release, police Chief Robert Shelide commended the arresting officer for getting “this reckless criminal” off the street, referring to Averiette.
“Taking a stolen gun off the street and stopping a drunk driver is a win for safety for our public,” the chief said.
According to police, the incident started when an officer noticed a Ford Mustang allegedly driving 75 mph in a 45 mph zone on June 13.
As the officer turned around in an attempt to make a traffic stop, he saw the vehicle take off at a high rate of speed. Police said the Mustang was driving at speeds in excess of 140 mph in the 45-mph zone.
A few moments later, an area homeowner called police to report a Ford Mustang had just pulled into his driveway, where the driver got out and ran from the vehicle. By the time the officer arrived, the unknown male had returned to the Mustang and driven off.
Police eventually located the vehicle stopped on a residential roadway.
The officer approached the vehicle and saw a male curled up in the back seat. Investigators said the officer ordered the occupant out of the vehicle and identified him as Averiette.
When the suspect got out of the Mustang, officers smelled the odor of intoxicants coming from him, officers said in the news release.
Police said Averiette refused to answer any questions. He was placed under arrest and put in a patrol vehicle.
During an inventory search of his vehicle, police located a short barrel rifle on the floorboard along with several open alcohol bottles.
“The officers looked over the rifle and noticed that the serial numbers were damaged as if they were attempting to file off or tamper with,” police said. “The officer was able to get enough numbers from the rifle to run it though dispatch. Dispatch was able to confirm the rifle was stolen out of Detroit.”
Averitte is due back in court on July 29 for a probable cause conference.
