A Macomb County man was killed in a two-car crash that closed Interstate 94 in Detroit for several hours Saturday night, according to police.

Michigan State Police said a 27-year-old male from St. Clair Shores was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been notified, State Police said Sunday in a news release.

According to MSP, the crash took place about 7:10 p.m. on I-94 near Gratiot Avenue.

A preliminary investigation shows a silver Jeep was driving in the left lane next to a green Jeep in the center lane.

“Both drivers attempted to change lanes at the same time and struck each other,” MSP said in the release. “The driver of the Jeep lost control, struck the median wall and rolled over. The driver of the green Jeep lost control and went up the right embankment hitting a tree.”

Investigators said the driver of the Jeep was not injured in the crash. The driver and one additional passenger of the Jeep were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The freeway was closed for approximately four hours as authorities conducted their investigation.

Police did not reveal the name of the St. Clair Shores man who was killed.

F/Lt. Mike Shaw said the investigation is currently ongoing.

“We want to remind drivers to be careful when changing lanes. Make sure you use your turn signal, check your mirrors and blind spots, and then start to change lanes,” he said in the release.
