SAN FRANCISCO >> The University of Florida men’s basketball team and its supportive fan base are Gator chomping their way to the Alamodome.
Thomas Haugh and Walter Clayton Jr. each made a pair of 3-pointers in the final 2 minutes, 50 seconds, and the No. 1 seed Gators rallied past No. 3 Texas Tech 84-79 to claim the West Regional championship in front of 16,778 fans at the Chase Center, home of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, on Saturday.
With their win, the Gators (34-4), the SEC Tournament champion, advance to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
“It’s crazy. I feel like I’m dreaming,” said Haugh, who recorded a double-double in the win. “I was watching the Round of 64 in the eighth grade, sneaking my phone into science class watching it. Now to say I’m playing in the Final Four is wild. It’s wild.”
The Gators will take on the South Region champion, either No. 1 Auburn or No. 2 Michigan State, in the national semifinals on Saturday in San Antonio.
They’re two wins away from earning their first national title since ’07, when they repeated as champion under coach Billy Donovan. As elated as the Gators were when the final buzzer sounded — players stormed the court in a jubilant celebration, they put on their championship schwag before posing for photos with their latest trophy, and cut down pieces of the net — they kept things in perspective after post-game festivities ended.
“We understand it’s not over yet,” said Clayton, a senior guard.
The Red Raiders (28-9), the Big XII Tournament semifinals, made national headlines Thursday with their huge rally to stun No. 10 Arkansas in the Sweet 16, but they had the tables turned in the Elite Eight.
“It was a good season,” said JT Toppin, a sophomore forward. “Nobody picked us to be here. Just to look back at it now, I’m proud and I just love my teammates. And I’m sad about the outcome.”
Federiko Federiko’s back-door dunk on a lob pass from Christian Anderson capped a 12-0 run that gave the Red Raiders a 67-59 lead with 7:49 left.
“We all kept telling each other to stay together, stay the course,” Clayton said. ” ‘There’s a lot of time left on the clock. Keep on playing to the final buzzer. Don’t break during adversity.’ “
Texas Tech made six of its first seven 3-point attempts, but the Gators stole the show, and win, with their late success from long range.
Florida trailed 75-66 with 2:51 remaining, but Haugh and Clayton unveiled their best Stephen Curry impressions down the stretch to send the Red Raiders reeling.
Texas Tech missed the front end of a couple one-and-one free throws during the Gators’ decisive run.
“Those were big-time plays that flipped the game a little bit, allowed Tommy to hit a second 3 to cut it to three,” Gators coach Todd Golden said. “I think they missed the next one as well, and Walter came down hit a big-time shot. They came down, got a bucket, and Walter hit another 3.”
Clayton, named the regional’s most outstanding player, gave the Gators the lead for good with his 3-pointer with 59 seconds remaining.
Florida made six free throws over the final 22 seconds to seal the win.
Clayton made three 3s, all in the second half, and 13 free throws to finish with a game-high 30 points. Haugh made four 3s and finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and guard Alijah Martin, a graduate student, had 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward/center Alex Condon had seven points and seven rebounds.
Junior forward Darrion Williams scored a team-high 23 points for the Red Raiders, and also had five rebounds and three steals. Toppin finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the tournament. Reserve Chance McMillian scored 14 points.
