On Senior Day at the O’Rena, there was plenty to celebrate.
Four of Oakland’s seniors, Allen Mukeba, Jayson Woodrich, DQ Cole and Buru Naivalurua, combined for 77 points in a 91-86 overtime victory over first-place Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon. The victory kept Oakland’s slim hopes alive for a first-round bye in the Horizon League tournament.
The victory also was head coach Greg Kampe’s 132nd Horizon League win, which is the most all-time. He had been tied with Detroit Mercy’s Perry Watson, who won 131 games in the Horizon League from 1993-2008, including when the league was known as the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.
Mukeba led the Golden Grizzlies with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Woodrich scored 20, including making 6 of 12 attempts from 3-point range. Woodrich’s big game came against his former team, and the meaning of the game was clear, as he was in the tears following the win.
Cole had 19 points, including some big free throws down the stretch in overtime, and had eight assists and seven rebounds. Naivalurua had 16 points and seven rebounds.
Woodrich, Cole and Malcolm Christie were celebrated on Senior Night. Mukeba and Naivalurua are keeping their options open to play another season, whether at Oakland or elsewhere.
“What meant a lot to me was that we won on Senior Night,” Kampe said.
“Our Senior Night is fantastic, and we got to put those kids out the way they’re supposed to be put out.
“That was the most meaningful thing to me.”
Kampe, 69, is in his 41st season as head coach at Oakland, making him the longest-tenured head coach in Division I.
Earlier this season, he collected his 700th career win.
His 699th win was more memorable, as it came when Oakland stunned Kentucky in the first round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.
Oakland (13-16, 10-8) is in sixth place in the Horizon League with two regular-season games left, and is two games back of fifth place. The Golden Grizzlies need to get to the No. 5 seed to have a first-round bye in the tournament. More likely, Oakland will be the No. 6 seed, and open Horizon League tournament play with no bye but a home game.
Oakland’s last two regular-season games are on the road, at Milwaukee on Thursday and Green Bay on Saturday. The Horizon League tournament starts at campus sites Tuesday, March 4.
Cleveland State (19-10, 13-5) dropped a half-game back of Robert Morris for first place in the Horizon League.
