Soldiers deploying for Middle East peacekeeping mission
More than 200 Colorado National Guard soldiers will deploy to the Middle East to support a treaty between Egypt and Israel, officials said Thursday.
Soldiers with the 1st Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment will work with an international peacekeeping force that supervises and enforces the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, military officials said in a news release.
The Fort Carson-based unit will conduct reconnaissance patrols and staff observation posts and help with base operations.
Colorado National Guard soldiers previously deployed to the Middle East in January 2020 to support security forces involved in U.S. Central Command operations. Troops also were activated to respond to local and statewide emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic and wildfires.
A departure ceremony is set for 8:30 a.m. today at Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, 7711 E. Academy Blvd. in Denver.

Student took knife to school, planned to kill teacher, sheriff says
Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Chatfield High School student Tuesday after, investigators say, the 16-year-old took a 7-inch butcher knife to school with the intent to kill a teacher.
The student hid the knife in a backpack and attended the teacher’s class Tuesday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The student did not act on the plan and instead went to the school office with the backpack, asked to speak with a counselor, and disclosed what they had intended to do,” the sheriff’s office said.
Workers at the school near Littleton confiscated the knife and notified a school resource officer. The student was arrested on suspicion of carrying a weapon on school grounds and was booked into the Marvin W. Foote Youth Services Center in Centennial.
Prosecutors may file additional charges, the sheriff’s office said.
