Police probe spate of antisemitic flyers

Antisemitic flyers have once again been distributed around Novato, this time in the area of Vineyard Road, police said.

Police found more than 70 leaflets “on sidewalks, streets and in driveways of residences” after they investigated around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, said police Lt. Sophia Winter.

“The flyers appear to be distributed randomly and we did not locate anyone who reported that they were a target of these flyers,” Winter said.

The flyers are “being classified as a hate motivated incident,” or “an action or behavior motivated by hate but legally protected by the First Amendment right to freedom of expression,” Winter said.

Similar flyers were found in September around Ignacio Boulevard and Bel Marin Keys Boulevard, then again in November on cars parked near Novato and San Marin high schools. The leaflets have previously popped up in San Rafael, Mill Valley and other locations in Marin County.

The Novato Police Department encouraged residents with potential information for investigators to call 415-897-4361 or use the online reporting system, which has English– and Spanish-language options.

Appeal filed against residential project

The Planning Commission will hear an appeal next week against a construction project in the Heather Gardens neighborhood.

The homeowners at 16 Diane Lane are seeking permission for a second-story addition and an accessory dwelling unit. A city zoning administrator approved the project in January.

A neighbor at 22 Diane Lane filed a challenge, citing concerns over the bulk of the project, the effect on privacy and light and the potential diminishment of public safety access. The city also received two other letters in opposition.

The Planning Commission hearing is scheduled for its meeting at 7 p.m. March 14. Project details and teleconference access instructions are available online at bit.ly/3JdjH49.
