Oak Lawn firefighters were hampered Monday by “hoarder-type conditions” while battling a house fire in which the homeowner suffered burns, according to the fire department.

The 59-year-old owner of the home in the 9300 block of Parkside Avenue suffered burns to his feet, hands and face and suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment, the department said in a news release.

Firefighters responded shortly before 3 a.m. and found heavy smoke pushing from three sides of the home, with fire visible in the center of the single-family home, according to the release.

Firefighting efforts were affected by “hoarder-type conditions” in the home, and the presence of stored material presented safety concerns such as the potential collapse of the home’s first floor, according to the department. Firefighters were withdrawn from the home and went back inside once the fire was under control, according to the release.

The department said there were no other injuries but that damage to the home was “substantial” and it is uninhabitable.

The Oak Lawn Fire Department is being assisted by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office in investigating the blaze, according to the department.
