Community volunteers and a Claremont nonprofit group pulled off a festive feat Thursday — handing over new shoes to more than 100 Jurupa Valley students who need them.

The gesture came in time for Christmas and included new socks, toys and a visit from Santa.

Shoes That Fit sold 124 new pairs of discounted shoes to volunteers to give to students at Mission Bell Elementary School in Jurupa Valley in a morning event dubbed Shoes for the Holidays, a Jurupa Unified School District news release states. It was the second such program.

Ana Flores, branch manager at Chino Commercial Bank, organized the event, with help from volunteer students in Mission Bell’s EarlyAct Club and the Mira Loma Middle Interact Club, the release states. Flores purchases the footwear at a discount from Shoes That Fit, using donations from the community.

Mission Bell Principal Angelena Aguilera said some students are more excited to receive shoes than toys.

“Many of our students are wearing shoes that are too small, too big or falling apart,” Aguilera said in the release. “Throughout the year, we are grabbing shoes and socks that we have on hand just to address daily crises. By having an event like this, we are able to capture many students at once and we know that this pair, at minimum, can get them through a few months of school.”

Aguilera added: “Every child deserves to have a pair of shoes that fit.”
