Office park proposed for Highland
The Highland Town Council on Monday heard a proposal for a new professional office park planned for Main Street.
Claude Gendreau, the project's developer, said he wants to put a professional office park on the site at 2209 Main St., which was formerly residential.
Gendreau said the full buildout of the site could have six to seven buildings and possibly a boutique hotel. “I always look for opportunities for something that's going to make a difference and improve an area,” Gendreau said.
The development won't look like a traditional office park, Gendreau said. It will have more of a downtown feel with sidewalks connecting to the surrounding neighborhood, he said.
Gendreau has previously redeveloped two projects in Homewood, Ill. — a former private golf course that's now open for the public and a former bank building that was converted into a boutique hotel.
Gendreau said the development will be a buffer between the residential areas and the commercial strip along Indianapolis Boulevard.
He said he envisions the tenants being dentists, doctors and other small office professionals.
“The focus is going to be on professional tenants,” Gendreau said.
Redevelopment Director Cecile Petro said the development will mix a new commercial use into the retail-focused Indianapolis Boulevard.
She said she thinks Gendreau's proposal will be one the town can be proud of.
“I'm excited about the possibilities here,” said town councilor Dan Vassar.
Vassar said he'd like developers to be sensitive to the surrounding neighborhood and hopes the project doesn't do anything to disturb residents.
