COVINA — Charter Oak’s Marquis Bradley delivered the game-sealing blow with a spectacular interception with 59 seconds left to hold off Colony’s upset bid, allowing the Chargers to hold on for an 18-14 victory Thursday.

It was more than just a victory for Charter Oak.

Soon afterward, Chargers coach Dom Farrar gathered his players and made a phone call to senior linebacker JD Sanchez, who was at the hospital after leaving in the third quarter in an ambulance after an apparent neck injury.

They just wanted to wish him prayers and tell him they got his back.

The Chargers, who were trailing 14-6 and had played lackluster until Sanchez’s injury, dominated the rest of the way to pull out the win to improve to 7-1 and 3-0 in the Sierra League. Colony dropped to 3-5 and 2-1.

Sanchez’s father, Joel Sanchez, who is an assistant coach with the Chargers, said late Thursday that his son is doing well.

“It puts the game into perspective in a hurry,” Farrar said of Sanchez’s injury. “It wasn’t about football at that point. You have to realize JD is our rock and our glue. Character wise, his moral courage, he’s a special athlete.”

Chargers quart erback Corin Berry, who finished with 285 yards, helped rally them back along with Legend Lyons in the third.

Berry threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Lyons that pulled the Chargers within two, and then Berry connected with Lyons again for a 46-yard touchdown that put them ahead for good, 18-14, with 35 seconds left in the third quarter.

Berry, who also had two interceptions, admitted it wasn’t his best game, completing just 15 of 30 passes. But when he needed to make big plays, he did.

And he admitted, Sanchez was on everyone’s mind.

“After (Sanchez) got hurt, he’s family, that man’s a brother to us, and we played for him and had an extra drive for him,” Berry said. “We were able to adjust, we talked about it, I talked with Legend and we saw where we needed to attack. We went out and executed to get it done.”

Colony, who got a great game from quarterback Liam McDaniel, who threw for 197 yards and a touchdown, nearly rallied back to win, but the Chargers got stops.

Colony’s Mo’i Alimoot picked off Berry at the Charter Oak 44 with eight minutes left, but they could not turn it into points.

After the Chargers missed a short field goal with 2:21 left, Colony rallied past midfield only to come up short following Bradley’s game-saving interception.

“We practice those end of game moments,” Bradley said of his INT. “As soon as I seen it up there I knew I was going to get it. I wasn’t going to let anyone take that from me.”

Lyons finished with three catches for 111 yards and Bradley with four catches for 58 yards. Antonio Reasby also had a solid game with five receptions for 96 yards, including one that set up their first-half touchdown.
