LA VERNE — For the second week in a row, Damien had to sweat it out, but came out clutch.

Damien quarterback Isaiah Arriaza threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Lannon for the go-ahead score with 2:11 left, allowing the Spartans to edge Chino Hills 20-17 on Friday night.

Arriaza threw for 184 yards and two touchdowns, and had to rally his team back again.

Last week, Damien trailed Upland by 21 points at the half before winning in double overtime 34-33.

Trailing by three points at halftime, the Spartans finally took their first lead in the third quarter.

On third and 21, Arriaza completed a 20 yard pass to Travon Garrison, and then on the next play, big tight end Kingston Schirmer busted loose for a 36-yard run to the Huskies’ 4-yard line.

The Spartans cashed it in on fourth-and-goal from the 1 when Luka Castillo pounded it home to give them a 14-10 lead with 6:34 left in the quarter.

But the Huskies got a break when Arriaza, under pressure, througth an ill-advised pass that the Huskies’ Durand Johnson picked off and returned to the Spartans’ 46.

Huskies quarterback Alex Medyn, who threw for 268 yards and ran in two scores, went to work.

Medyn completed a 21-yard pass to Cameron Bateman to the 4-yard line. A couple plays later, Medyn scored on a 1-yard keeper to push them ahead 17-14 with 6:15 left.

But the Spartans, who improved to 6-2 andn 3-0 in the Baseline League, came up clutch on their final drive.

Chino Hills (5-3, 2-1) outplayed Damien in the first half.

The Huskies went 10 plays to go 73 yards on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead.

The Huskies kept the drive alive on fourth-and-7 when Medyn converted a 25 yard completion to Cameron Bateman to the Spartans’ eight yard line. Two plays later, Medyn scored on a five-yard keeper.

Travon Garrison helped Damien tie the score with a spectacular 41-yard touchdown reception. Garrison stretched out to pull in an over-the-shoulder ball from Arriaza that made it 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

The Spartans’ offense couldn’t do much else the rest of the first half, missing a short field goal that would have given them the lead.

The Huskies quickly responded.

Medyn looked like he was going to lead the Huskies to another touchdown with 13- and 33-yard completions.

But the Huskies’ drive stalled on the Spartans’ 5, and they settled for Jeon Sims’ 22-yard field goal to go up 10-7 with just over three minutes left in the second quarter, and it stayed that way until halftime.
