SAN JOSE — Planet Fitness is eyeing a new 24-hour location within the Sun Garden Shopping Center near the corner of Monterey Road and East Alma Avenue in San Jose, plans on file with city officials show.

The around-the-clock operation would replace a 12,800-square-foot former Teletron store at 1462 Monterey Rd., one of the gateways to downtown San Jose a few miles away, planning documents show. The building is between a Walmart Neighborhood Market store and Big 5 Sporting Goods store.

“Planet Fitness will include approximately 100 pieces of cardio equipment and 80 pieces of strength conditioning equipment,” according to planning documents.

It wasn’t immediately clear when Planet Fitness hopes to open its new location.

The proposal arrives at a time when fitness and healthy activity outlets are planning to open or have already opened locations in San Jose.

The Planet Fitness site is also a reminder that an array of merchants are seeking locations in the Bay Area left empty by retailers with a shrinking footprint.

In San Jose, Altitude Trampoline Park took over a portion of the space of a one-time Walmart, Hobby Lobby has opened a store at a former Bed Bath and Beyond, Sports Basement took over a shuttered Barnes & Noble, and RH, formerly Restoration Hardware, leased a now-closed Big Lots! store.
