If you’ve always felt that ballet would be better enjoyed while snacking on a side of bacon — and perhaps a coffee you could enjoy mid-pas de deux — Centennial State Ballet is speaking your language.
On Sunday, the company will present “A Brunch of Ballet” at The St. Vrain at 635 Third Ave., Longmont. The event is specifically designed for families, first-time audiences and anyone who finds the standard “sit still and don’t make a sound” theater experience a bit drab.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and the event will pair a full brunch buffet with a narrated, abbreviated performance of “Beauty and the Beast.”
Unlike traditional productions where an accidental sneeze can earn a glare from three rows ahead, this event is sensory-friendly. Organizers are actually encouraging audience members to move, react and engage freely — which is another way of saying your toddler can wave their arms around without it being a scandal.
The version of “Beauty and the Beast” the ballet will perform is based on the original 18th-century story, rather than the Disney movie, so audience members can expect a bit more historical French flair and significantly fewer talking candelabras.
Guests will be served select divertissements (ballet-speak for “the short, flashy parts”) performed by company dancers while they dine, essentially a highlight reel accompanied by a plate of pancakes.
Following the performance, guests will have the opportunity to meet cast members in costume and take photos.
According to the Centennial State Ballet, the event is intended to serve as an introduction to ballet in a format that removes some of the barriers associated with traditional performances, including length, formality and expectations around audience behavior.
General admission tickets to “A Brunch of Ballet” are $35, or you can grab a table of 10 for $220 if you have a particularly large entourage. Tickets and more information can be found at CentennialStateBallet.org.
