Quarterback Jamari Vaughns threw a pair of touchdown passes to receiver Rio Cruz, but the Cabrillo College football team suffered a 32-13 loss to San Jose City in Aptos on Saturday night.

Both scoring strikes came in the fourth quarter. SJCC led 25-0 entering the final stanza of the team’s Golden Coast Conference game.

Cruz’s first touchdown reception came with 11:54 remaining and his second came with 3:28 on the clock.

Vaughns finished 21-of-29 passing for 271 yards. Brandon George was his go-to target and hauled in six passes for 89 yards. Cruz Ferris had two catches for 50 yards, and Cruz had four catches for 49 yards.

Cabrillo. finished with 364 yards on offense. Running back Peyton Hatten had 20 carries for 71 yards.

The Seahawks lost both of their fumbles, and San Jose lost one of their two fumbles.

The Jaguars (3-1, 1-0) finished with 404 yards on offense, including 252 passing.

SJCC quarterback Will Augenstein threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jamir Shephard, and was picked off once, by Jeter Olivares.

The Jaguars’ Jesse Lajes rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Issac Nirza and Augenstein also rushed for scores.

Tosin Alade was a beast on defense for the Seahawks, He made a team-high 14 tackles, including 2.5 sacks, and forced two fumbles, one of which he recovered.

Cabrillo (0-4, 0-1) plays at Coalinga (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Boys cross country

Artichoke Invitational >> Santa Cruz senior Eli Fitchen-Young took first out of 233 runners in the 2.3-mile Small Schools race at the 53rd Artichoke Invitational in Half Moon Bay on Saturday.

Fitchen-Young completed the course in 11:23. Nueva junior Ryan Fitzpatrick took second in 11:55.

Fitchen-Young almost broke the 2007 course record.

Four other locals posted top-50 finishes and three of them compete for Monte Vista Christian. Mustangs junior Gavin Beckmen (13:14) took 32nd, senior Justin McCullick (13:17) took 37th, and senior Bradley Orlando (13:28) took 48th.

Scotts Valley sophomore Jackson Stull (13:25) took 44th.

St Mary’s College (36) took first out of 33 teams. Santa Cruz (253) took seventh, MVC (294) was 11th, and Scotts Valley (418) was 15th.

Pacific Grove Invitational >> Harbor junior Oliver Willet took 66th in 20:17 at the 5,000-meter Pacific Grove Invitational at Palo Corona Regional Park in Carmel-By-The-Sea on Saturday.

Boys water polo

Santa Cruz 15, Archbishop Mitty 14, OT >> Junior Hayden Johnson had five goals, two assists and one steal, and the Cardinals beat the Monarchs in the championship match at the Monterey Bay Invitational on Saturday.

Senior Matthias Cruz had three goals, five assists and one steal for the Cardinals. Senior Pa’kalani Vaka-Saxton had three goals, one assist and two steals, and junior Nikolaus Kay also scored three goals. Sophomore Robert Murphy had a goal and an assist.

Goalie Laird Bowser made six blocks for the Cardinals (10-2).

Santa Cruz hosts San Lorenzo Valley on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and St. Ignatius on Friday at 7 p.m.

Girls water polo

Arroyo Grande Fall Classic >> Aptos lost to Clovis North 14-9 in the gold bracket championship at the Arroyo Grande Fall Classic on Saturday.

The Mariners also lost to Clovis West 12-3, and beat Morro Bay 13-7, St. Mary’s 9-6, and San Luis Obispo 12-1.

Mariners goalie Mary Suarez-Abraham had 47 blocks in the tournament. Adelaide Friedley led the Mariners in goals with 12 and teammate Madi Knudsen totaled nine goals.

Triathlon

Mermaid Triathlon >> Rio Del Mar’s Becky Lavelle took first out of 129 athletes competing in the sprint event in the Mermaid Triathlon on Saturday.

Lavelle finished in 1:13:30. She completed the 600-meter swim in 13:11, 10.5-mile bike in 30:53, and 3.1-mile run in 21:30.

Chico’s Joanne Gilchrist (1:21:38) took second, and Davis’ Katie Reece (1:23:32) took third.

Women’s soccer

UC Santa Cruz 2, at Chapman 0 >> Amanda Scott and Chelyn Ackerman scored goals six minutes apart early in the first half, and the Banana Slugs posted the shutout Saturday.

Scott’s second goal of the season was assisted by Emily De Los Santos in the ninth minute, and Ackerman fifth goal of the campaign was assisted by Emilie Brack in the 15th minute.

Goalie Ainsley Gove made three saves for the Banana Slugs. Chapman’s Sienna Gomez made one save.

UCSC (5-2-4) played at California Lutheran (7-0-3) in Thousand Oaks on Sunday, after the Sentinel went to press.

Men’s soccer

UCSC 2, at Chapman 2 >> Soren Groessl scored the equalizer in the 75th minute, and the Banana Slugs earned a draw in Orange on Saturday.

Joaquin Greenberg gave UCSC a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute, but Chapman’s Diego Perez tied the score in the 38th minute, and the Panthers went ahead on Evan White’s scoring strike in the 65th minute.

Chapman finished with four saves, and UCSC had zero.

UCSC (4-1-6) play at Lincoln in Oakland on Wednesday at noon.
