WATSONVILLE >> St. Francis quarterback/linebacker Javier DaRosa-Fonseca added to his bid for Pacific Coast Athletic League postseason honors as he helped the Sharks overcome a major hurdle in Mission North Division action.

DaRosa-Fonseca passed for a touchdown and ran for another on offense, and recorded two interceptions on defense. His second pick midway through the fourth quarter set up Joseph Dayritt’s second touchdown run as the Sharks rallied for a 31-21 win over host Watsonville on Saturday.

“It was a heck of a football game, like many of the St. Francis-Watsonville games have been,” Sharks coach John Ausman said. “We knew it was going to be a battle.”

The teams were initially slated to play Friday night at Watsonville, but a power outage forced the game to be postponed.

The Wildcatz fell apart late in the afternoon sun after enduring two big injuries. Bruising running back Abraham Martinez was injured in the third quarter and didn’t return, and Luis Marquez was injured with 6:13 left in the fourth. The game was delayed for 10-plus minutes as Marquez was attended to and he was taken off the field by an ambulance.

Martinez gave the Wildcatz a 7-0 lead with his 5-yard run in the second quarter, and Marquez made it 14-0 with his 21-yard reception later in the quarter.

Receiver Robert Gomez Jr. hauled in a 35-yard scoring pass from DaRosa-Fonseca and the quarterback scored on a 27-yard run to knot the score at 14-all by halftime.

“He’s a great football player,” Ausman said of DaRosa-Fonseca. “Great players make plays, great players win games. It’s becoming very obvious that’s he’s one of those players that’s special. In big games he elevates his play and he elevates the play of his teammates around him.”

Dayritt gave St. Francis (5-1, 2-0) its first lead with 5:26 left in the third quarter after he raced 76 yards for a touchdown.

Watsonville receiver Patrick Miller-Brown hauled in a 35-yard pass from Nate Aguilar to tie the game at 21 in the third.

The Sharks gained separation in the fourth quarter, after Aidan Berrelleza-Hernandez booted a 34-yard field goal and Dayritt capped scoring with 6:27 left on his 7-yard run.

The Wildcatz (3-3, 1-1), coming off an emotional win over Monte Vista Christian (2-4, 0-2), look to get back on track at Seaside (0-4, 0-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

St. Francis has a bye next week and plays at Alisal (2-3, 1-0) on Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
