The wrestling program at Mead High School doesn’t have the depth of talent it had last winter, when the Mavericks won five individual state titles and had the Class 4A team title wrapped up before the championship matches even began at Ball Arena.
They’re still a force.
Led by returning state champs Leister Bowling IV (175-pound weight class) and Grant Gordon (285s), the Mavs are one of 14 teams headed to the Granite Peaks League wrestling tournament this weekend.
Here are five games or events worth following.
Holy Family at Frederick girls basketball, Friday, 5:30 p.m.
The Tigers were 4A’s runner-up last winter. The Golden Eagles were a 5A quarterfinalist.
A lot has changed.
The Golden Eagles (9-5, 3-2 GPL) lost their floor general from a year ago with the graduation of Gabby Jima. But they still have veteran point guard Zoe Wittler, and she’s having a career season averaging 14.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists.
On Tuesday, Frederick beat red-hot Legacy by 38. It was a nice bounce-back after losing big to the league’s juggernauts — Broomfield and Mead — last week.
Holy Family (7-4, 2-2), meanwhile, is still looking for consistency after losing so much from last year, including its longtime coach Ron Rossi, who retired.
The Tigers have won two straight following a three-game skid.
Castle View at Monarch ice hockey, Friday, 6:45 p.m.
The 5A No. 1 Coyotes (8-1-2) have proven to be the best hockey team in the state through two months.
Castle View (5-8) has not. Though, it has something no one else in the state does this season: a win over Monarch.
Winners of their past four contests, the Coyotes beat No. 3 Valor Christian, No. 4 Cherry Creek and No. 5 Regis Jesuit in a four-day span earlier in the month. Then last week, they topped No. 6 Denver East.
Zachary Rathbun has helped lead the charge of late, currently on a three-game scoring streak where he’s tallied four goals and two assists. He leads the team with seven goals and six assists on the year.
Monarch’s best may be in net, though. Goalies Joshua Ringoen and Benjamin Zelio have both been spectacular this season, touting respective save percentages of 95% and 92%.
Ringoen had 30 saves in the 3-2 win over defending champ Regis Jesuit on Jan 11. Zelio stopped 26 shots in a 4-2 win over Denver East on Jan. 15.
Monarch’s lone loss of the season came to the Sabercats on Dec. 21. Steven Kannenberg — tied for ninth in the state with 13 goals — scored twice in a 6-4 victory for Castle View.
Horizon at Legacy boys basketball, Friday, 7 p.m.
The Lightning (9-5, 4-1 GPL) have won seven of their past eight games, with the lone blemish during that span coming in overtime to Fairview on Jan. 10.
They’ve done it with balance. They have three players averaging double-digit points per game this winter — Jaedon Ward (12.9), Ari Harpring (11.5) and Matthew Allshouse (10.5).
On Tuesday, Ward and Harpring each had 14 points in a win over Frederick, while Allshouse and Jake Puttkamer added 11 apiece.
Next up, they face league-leading Horizon (12-2, 5-0), which escaped Holy Family with a 55-54 win on Tuesday.
Colorado Academy at Jefferson Academy boys basketball, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
The Jaguars (9-2. 1-1 4A/3A Metro League) are looking to end an 11-game losing streak to Colorado Academy (8-5, 0-1).
They’re set up for it.
This winter, they have two top-10 scorers in the 4A classification — Josh Neely (19.5) and Jimeto Orji (19.3).
On Tuesday, they bounced back from last week’s loss to 4A No. 1 Kent Denver with a 66-63 win over Stargate School.
CA, meanwhile, lost to Prospect Ridge Academy, 52-48.
GPL wrestling tournament, Saturday, Silver Creek High School
Ranking-wise, Mead and Erie are the favorites here.
That’s, of course, if everyone wrestles all their guys. And upsets go the way of the dodo bird.
The Mavericks are ranked seventh in 4A by On The Mat, which is the state’s official wrestling polls. The Tigers are ninth in 5A.
Bowling IV is No. 1 in 4A 175s and could be in line to meet Erie’s Austin Muir (5A No. 7) deep in the bracket.
The best matchup, however, might be in 190s. Centaurus’ Mason Shore is ranked second in the 5A weight class, while Erie’s Carson Hageman is third. Mead’s Carter Woods is third in 4A 190s, followed by Silver Creek’s Ibrahim Kabore in sixth.
