Harbor High seniors Isla Johnson and Maren O’Farrell defeated Santa Cruz senior Shelby Leonardich and freshman Haisley Flanagan 21-15, 21-12 in the finals to win the Mark Brewer Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League Beach Volleyball Pairs Tournament.

The Pirates’ seniors finish their careers with an undefeated season and Johnson won the tournament for the third time. There was no pairs tournament in 2023.

Johnson will play beach next season for The University of Utah, and O’Farrell will play indoor for Cal Poly-SLO.

Scotts Valley’s Hayden Smith and Aila Papadopoulos, and Soquel’s Emma Benedetti and Lana Walding tied for third place.Harbor’s Grace Stryker and Tea Stockwell, Aptos’ Kenzie Smith and Chloe Luis, Santa Cruz’s Maggie Redwine and Natalie Monroe, and Harbor’s Cecile Novembre and Lise Corstorphine tied for fifth place.

Tournament brass renamed the tournament this year to honor Brewer, a longtime beach player, coach and official who died March 27.

Legacy Fighting Alliance >> Chris Mecate defeated Javier Reyes in their lightweight bout by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) at LFA 208 at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz on Friday.

Jacob Rosales submitted Georgii Eivas with a neck crank at 2:13 of Round 1 in their catchweight bout, the co-main event.

In other main card action, Josh Hokit beat Eric Lunsford by TKO in Round 1 of their heavyweight bout, Luis Francischinelli beat Angelo Rivera Jr. by TKO in Round 1 of their welterweight bout, Joe Kropschot won by submission over Adland Benson, using a rear naked choke) in Round 2 of their middleweight bout, Allan Begosso won by submission over Davaajamts Batsuren with a ninja choke in Round 2 of their bantomweight bout, and Isaiah Pinson won by TKO over Tony Charles in Round 2 of their light heavyweight bout.

In the prelims, Santa Cruz’s Shane Torres won by TKO over Shad Walters at the 3:44 mark in Round 1 of their catchweight bout.

Other prelim winners include: Jermaine Edwards (lightweight), Aline David (women’s strawweight), Noah Bey (lightweight), Vinny Dias (catchweight), and Shealor Ladd (light heabyweight).

Girls lacrosse

Scotts Valley 16, at Aptos 14 >> The Falcons, the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division runner-up, beat the host Mariners, the PCAL Mission Division champion, in their CCS play-in match Friday night.

The Falcons played without senior leader Sofia Niklaus.

Falcons midfielder Skylar Dufour had a personal-best nine points (five goals and four assists). She also had eight draw controls, and seven ground balls. Midfielder Lola Ritsema took the draw in Niklaus’ place and won 20 draws with a 56% draw win rate. Ritsema also scored four goals and had one assist, and four ground balls.

Midfielder Dillon Fiorita had three goals and one assist, and attackers Erin Szymanski and Serena Sanford-Brantley each had two goals and two assists.

Falcons goalie Lili Raif made four saves and teammate Natalie Warner made a save.

The CCS seeding meeting takes place Sunday.

Boys lacrosse

Los Gatos 18, at Aptos 3 >> The PCAL Mission Division champion Mariners (13-3, 11-1) saw their season come to a close in their CCS play-in game Friday.

The Wildcats, the PCAL Gabilan Division runner-up, improve to 12-8.

The CCS seeding meeting takes place Sunday.

High school baseball

Soquel 4, at Scotts Valley 1 >> The Knights trailed 1-0 through four innings but scored in each of the final three innings to rally for the SCCAL win Friday.

Gabe Virgallito had a hit and two RBI for the Knights (22-1, 11-1). Cash Moran had two hits, two stolen bases, and scored a run. Jake Escalante and Noah Piona each had a hit and run scored.

Lukas Bloom had two hits for the Falcons (10-14, 6-7). Owen Martin had a hit and run scored.

Luke Shoemaker gave up five hits and one run over five innings and earned the win.

Soquel hosts Aptos (9-13, 5-7) on Monday at 4 p.m. Scotts Valley plays at San Lorenzo Valley (3-21, 0-13) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

At Santa Cruz 7, SLV 1 >> Cameron Fusari had two hits, one RBI, and scored a run in the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Friday.

AJ DaCosta had two RBI for the Cardinals (13-11, 10-3). Fernando DaCosta had a hit, one walk, and scored twice. Morgan Toohey also scored twice.

Larrabee Mitchell had two hits and scored a run for the Cougars (3-21, 0-13).

Winning pitcher Jason Graff gave up three hits and an unearned run over six innings while striking out six batters.

On Tuesday at 4 p.m., Santa Cruz plays at Aptos (9-13, 5-7), while SLV hosts Scotts Valley (10-14, 6-7).

At Aptos 16, Harbor 4 >> The Mariners exploded for 10-plus runs for the second time in three games and fourth time this season in their SCCAL win Friday.

Alec Mendoza had four hits, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Mariners (9-13, 5-7). Adam Ayon had three hits, one RBI, and scored three runs. Isaiah Work had three hits, one RBI, two stolen bases, and scored a run. Kaden Kusiak had a hit, one RBI, and scored three runs. Cole McGillicuddy had one hit, two RBI, and scored twice. Samuel Garcia had two RBI and scored a run.

Jason Yager pitched five innings for the win and Maverick Tidd threw two scoreless innings of relief. They struck out a combined 12 batters.

Aptos plays at Silver Creek (20-4) in San Jose on Saturday at 11 a.m. Harbor (15-10, 6-7) hosts Soquel on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Monte Vista Christian 9, at Alvarez 3; 9 inn. >> The Mustangs exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth inning in their PCAL Mission Division win Friday.

Carter Wright had three hits, including a pair of triples, four RBI, and scored twice for the Mustangs (19-5, 9-3). Brady Cortez had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Parker Brown drove in a pair of runs, and Tyson Shaw scored twice.

Ivan Chavez had four hits for the Eagles (10-14, 3-9).

Dante Darnell pitched three innings of scoreless relief and earned the win.

MVC plays at Alisal (13-9, 6-6) on Monday at 4 p.m.

High school softball

At Watsonville 2, Palma 1; 12 inn. >> Jillian Lerma had two hits and one RBI, and Layla Romero and Audrina Rodriguez scored runs in the Wildcatz’s walk-off win in PCAL Gabilan Division thriller on Friday.

The teams were tied 1-all after the first inning.

Pitcher Amelia Martinez earned the complete-game win. She gave up five hits and eight walks while striking out 10 batters.

Watsonville (12-11, 2-8) plays at Everett Alvarez (14-10, 5-5) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
