SAN JOSE >> Temperatures were in the high 80s during the girls’ prelims at the Central Coast Section Swimming Championships on Friday. But for the coastal contingent, used to those typical, perfect days in the 70s, it must’ve felt like a pizza oven as they waited for their heats to take place.
Aptos High junior Adelaide Friedley, the headliner from Santa Cruz County after making a pair of finals in 2024, didn’t have her best outing. Still, she advanced to Saturday’s B Final at Independence High in the 100-yard breaststroke.
She posted the 13th-fastest time in the event (1:06.02), but can place anywhere from ninth to 16th depending on her performance in the consolation final.
“Not that great,” said Friedley, of her time. “It’s rough, it’s hot. I don’t know, not every meet can be a great meet. … It’s part of the sport. Sometimes you’re not going to have a great meet and you got to keep going, honestly.”
Friedley also placed 24th in the 100 free (54.20), narrowly missing a top-16 finish needed to advance.
She also competed in two relay races.
Friedley teamed with junior Rose Lockwood, and sophomores Natalie Allen and Mary Suarez-Abraham for 21st in the 400 free relay (3:47.39). That Mariners quartet also took 29th in the 200 medley relay (1:56.01).
“My muscles are toast,” said Friedley, who had her training affected by an injury sustained while lifeguarding earlier this month.
Allen, a sophomore, also took 35th in the 200 free (2:00.46).“I was going for sub-2, but I couldn’t pull it off today,” Allen said. “I just needed to be out faster. I went out in a 28.3 (seconds), 28-high kinda, and I need to be out in a 27 or so.”
Allen competed in a relay at CCS as a freshman, so the 200 free marked her first individual event at the section meet.
“Maybe less nervous, but my first individual, so definitely the nerves got to me, I guess,” she said. “This was kinda my goal to get here, but still kinda disappointed in my performance just now, but still happy to be here.”
Soquel sophomore Ayla Nelson, who sprained her shoulder while doing a turn in the pool last week, took 24th in the 100 fly in a personal-best 59.46. She said she iced her shoulder regularly and took Ibuprofen.
Her pre-race thoughts included: “Let me do my best, let my shoulder feel good… let me finish.”
“I’ve been trying to get back this week and I went a personal best, so that went good,” she said. “You never know, it’s so much anxiety. Oh, my God. … I was a little scared coming in here, but I did my best, and I did good.”
Soquel (junior Mekena Hansen, sophomores Izzie Bridi-Milligan and Liz Penny, and freshman Keira Burke) took 25th in the 400 free relay (3:51.56)
Soquel (Hansen, Bridi-Milligan, Nelson, and Penny) took 30th in the 200 free relay (1:45.84).
Soquel (junior Mikayla Hansen, Bridi-Milligan, Burke, and Nelson) took 31st in the 200 medley relay (1:56.96).
Bridi-Milligan took 35th in the 50 free (25.37). “I didn’t add or lose any time, but from what I’ve seen from the other swimmers, I definitely moved up from my original place, so I’m happy with that,” she said after the 50.
Soquel junior Natasha Ackerstein skipped completing the 50 free due to injury.
