LONDON >> Manchester City’s 32-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League ended in a 2-1 loss at Bournemouth on Saturday as Liverpool wrested back the lead in the title race.

Pep Guardiola had warned this week that his Manchester City team could be “in trouble” after injuries kept piling up, and those comments quickly proved prophetic on an eventful day that also saw Arsenal lose 1-0 at Newcastle while Liverpool needed a late comeback to beat Brighton 2-1 and go top of the league.

The biggest surprise came at Bournemouth, though, as the Cherries stunningly took a 2-0 lead at home thanks to goals from Antoine Semenyo and Evanilson and then held off City’s comeback attempt. Josko Gvardiol pulled one goal back in the 82nd while Erling Haaland had a header saved in injury time and then hit the post from the rebound.

It was City’s first league loss of 2024 but second straight 2-1 defeat in all competitions after being eliminated from the League Cup by Tottenham in midweek, and the defending champion now trails Liverpool by two points.

“Today we could not handle their intensity that they had and that’s why we lost the game,” Guardiola said.

Almirola defends NASCAR Championship >> Aric Almirola won the Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway, a victory that gave Cole Custer a chance to defend his NASCAR championship.

Almirola is running a part-time schedule for Joe Gibbs Racing so he wasn’t playoff eligible. AJ Allmendinger and Austin Hill had already qualified for the playoffs, so there were two open slots for six drivers.

The win by Almirola, his third of the season, allowed the final two slots in the championship race to be decided on points.

Glenn overcomes a fall to win her first Grand Prix figure title >> Amber Glenn overcame a fall and her own doubts to win a maiden Grand Prix figure skating title at the Grand Prix de France.

The American skater had the lead from Friday’s short program. That and the support of the crowd got her through a tough free skate in which she fell on a triple flip and put a hand onto the ice to steady herself on two other jumps.

Glenn posted the day’s third-best score in the free skate but it was enough to win overall with a total of 210.44 points, ahead of Japanese skaters Wakaba Higuchi, who won at Skate America last month, and Rion Sumiyoshi.
