A brake fire caused a semitrailer truck to catch fire Tuesday afternoon and completely stopped traffic on eastbound Interstate 80 as fire crews worked to put out the blaze, officials said.
About 12:45 p.m., black smoke could be seen off South 80th Avenue crossing over I-80 as crews worked to put out the fire.
The truck tractor detached before the trailer, which was hauling lard, was fully engulfed in flame, according to a news release from Illinois State Police. The agency did not disclose if anyone was injured.
Illinois State Police District 5 troopers responded to the call, according to the news release. All lanes were shut down at 12:45 p.m., state police said, but about 2:15 p.m. the left lane was open while crews cleaned the scene of the accident.
Firefighters from Tinley Park, Oak Forest and Frankfort responded to the fire.
