A Macomb County driver was charged Tuesday in connection with a three-car crash in Detroit that resulted in the death of a seven-year-old boy and injured several of the boy’s family members, according to prosecutors.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Ahmad Nyjahjuan Jastta, 30, of Roseville, was charged with one count of operating while intoxicated causing death, and three counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury.

Jastta was arraigned in 36th District Court in Detroit, where his bond was set at $500,000 cash/surety. A probable cause conference was scheduled for Nov. 25 and a preliminary exam will be held Dec. 2.

“It is alleged that defendant Jastta was intoxicated, driving at a high rate of speed westbound on East Seven Mile Road, when he struck the victims’ vehicle, fatally injuring the seven-year-old victim, before fleeing the scene on foot,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a news release.

According to police and prosecutors, the incident took place about 4:35 p.m. this past Saturday at the intersection of East Seven Mile and Mound roads.

Detroit police discovered the seven-year-old victim unresponsive, lying next to the vehicle. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the child deceased. The remaining victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment, including a five-year-old girl, a 21-year-old man, and a 23-year-old woman, all of Detroit.

Jastta allegedly fled the crash scene on foot, but returned two hours later when he surrendered to authorities, according to police.

Jawyna Griffin, the aunt of the little boy who died, identified him as Jerome Coleman Jr. She also identified the others injured in the crash as her 5-year-old niece, Kiaree, who has a brain injury resulting from a skull fracture. Her her 21-year-old nephew De-mari and 23-year-old niece LaCresha are both suffering from neck and spinal injuries sustained in the crash.

Griffin said the suspect driver should have requested a ride from someone or a ride-sharing service.

“Now we are here with a seven-year-old boy who has lost his life,” she told WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). “His life was ahead of him for what? Because (Jastta) decided to make one stupid decision.”

In a narrative on a fundraising page, family members described Jerome as a “bright light” who was very intelligent with a personality that reminded you of an old soul. He loved fishing and climbing on trees, relatives said.

“The tragic loss of Jerome Jr. and the injuries of three other children has brought the parents Jerome and Tawyna extreme emotional pain and stress,” family said on a GoFundMe page. “The parents have a lot of pieces to gather and there are financial burdens and financial hardships.”
