Ten-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner plans to sign with the Atlanta Dream, marking the end of her 11-year career with the Phoenix Mercury.
She announced the move in a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday night. Her agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, confirmed the 6-foot-9 star center would sign a one-year deal with Atlanta.
The 34-year-old Griner, who was drafted No. 1 overall by Phoenix in 2013 out of Baylor, missed the 2022 season when she was detained for nearly 10 months in Russia after authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis. She was freed in a prisoner swap when the U.S. released notorious Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.
Griner, who has career averages of 17.7 points and 7.4 rebounds, joins a talented Dream squad led by Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray.
Earlier in the day, the Mercury were finalizing a deal to acquire five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun.

Mike McCarthy has decided against coaching in 2025, removing himself as a candidate to fill the NFL’s last remaining head coaching vacancy with the New Orleans Saints.
The 61-year-old McCarthy, who spent the past five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and won a Super Bowl during his 12 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was the most established candidate under consideration by the Saints.
The Cowboys hired former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as defensive coordinator for his second stint on the Dallas staff.
Eberflus, 54, returns to the Cowboys two months after the Bears fired him 12 games into his third season. He was 14-32 with Chicago.
The Bears hired Eberflus after his four-year stint as defensive coordinator in Indianapolis. He had spent the previous seven seasons as a linebackers coach with the Cowboys.
Eberflus is joining the staff of coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was hired to replace McCarthy.
The Bears hired Dennis Allen as defensive coordinator and Declan Doyle as offensive coordinator under new coach Ben Johnson.
The addition of Allen, 52, puts a former head coach on Johnson’s first staff in his new position. Allen went 18-25 with New Orleans before he was fired on Nov. 4 after the Saints lost seven consecutive games. He also coached the Raiders for two-plus seasons, going 8-28.
Allen is an experienced defensive coordinator. He had that role in New Orleans for six seasons.
Doyle just finished his second season as the tight ends coach for Denver.
Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Buffalo’s Josh Allen and Washington’s Jayden Daniels won’t be participating in the Pro Bowl Games this week.
The NFL announced final rosters Tuesday that didn’t include any of those quarterbacks. New England Patriots rookie Drake Maye is replacing Jackson on the AFC roster, Pittsburgh’s Russell Wilson is filling in for Allen and Tampa Bay’s Baker Mayfield was selected to fill Daniels’ spot.
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook and center Connor McGovern also were selected as replacements.
Cook fills the spot left open by Baltimore’s Derrick Henry. McGovern replaces Kansas City center Creed Humphrey.
Steelers guard Isaac Seumalo will replace Kansas City’s Trey Smith.
The Pro Bowl Games run Thursday through Sunday in Orlando, Florida, and include skills competitions and a flag football game.

The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Ryan Pressly and cash from the Houston Astros for minor league pitcher Juan Bello.
Pressly, who waived his no-trade clause, likely slides into the Cubs’ closer’s role. He had a 3.49 ERA in 59 games last year serving as a setup man for Josh Hader.
The Cubs are paying $8.5 million of Pressly’s $14 million salary for 2025 in the last year of his contract.
Hader replaced Pressly as Houston’s closer after he agreed to a $95 million, five-year contract last January. He had 34 saves in 71 games as the Astros won the AL West for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
Pressly, acquired from the Twins in July 2018, rose to prominence with the Astros, becoming one of baseball’s best relievers.
The two-time All-Star was a key performer when Houston won the World Series title in 2022. He had a career-high 33 saves with a 2.98 ERA and then went on a dominant run in the playoffs. He saved six postseason games, striking out 13 while allowing an unearned run and four hits in 11 innings over 10 appearances.
Pressly is 35-36 with a 3.27 ERA and 112 saves in 623 major league games.

Neymar won six titles with his boyhood club Santos, including a Copa Libertadores trophy in 2011.
