Two Temecula teens have qualified to compete in barrel racing in the 61st annual Lakeside Rodeo, to be held Thursday through April 27 in Lakeside.

They are Avery Gourley, 14, and Makayla Fimbres, 16, and they have been selected to compete in runs on their horses in the race on the Lakeside Rodeo’s opening night Thursday, according to an email from Ashleigh Gourley.

Avery and Makayla train with Murrieta instructor Belinda Bates of Bates Barrel Horses. Avery has been competing in barrel racing for two years and Makayla for three years, according to the email.

In barrel racing, competitors race a quarter horse around a cloverleaf pattern of three barrels.
