Two weeks ago, we gave our updated rankings of the top 10 baseball teams in Macomb County so far this season.

A lot has happened since then — there’s a new No. 1, another team leapt from the brink into the top five and a new squad has introduced themselves into the rankings.

As a MAC school, Grosse Pointe South deserves credit for their blazing start, but you won’t find them in these rankings since it is reserved for Macomb County squads only. Additionally, Armada dropped out of the rankings, but are right on the brink and, with a good stretch of ball, can jump right back in next time.

Without further ado:

1. De La Salle Pilots (12-2, up one)

Ranked first in the state by the coaches and now first in the area by yours truly, the Pilots’ turnaround has been a sight to behold. Despite having just one Division I baseball commit, they’ve torn through their Catholic League slate (so far) with a 10-2 mark, and after some downtime, they beat Avondale 15-0 twice in a doubleheader.

They’re getting back to it this week with a DH against Brother Rice, whom they’ve already beaten twice.

2. Stevenson Titans (13-2, up one)

The Titans went 9-1 since our last rankings, which includes multiple wins over Anchor Bay, Chippewa Valley, L’Anse Creuse North and Eisenhower. And while their bats, for the most part, have been what is winning them games, they’ve also gotten great efforts from their pitching and, especially, their defense.

A massive MAC Red series against Dakota starts this week.

3. Dakota Cougars (12-4, down two)

While Dakota is down to No. 3 after being No. 1 for the first few weeks, they’re still right in the discussion as the best team in Macomb County and well-beyond, too.

Three of their losses came in the last two weeks, losing run-rule games to both Romeo and Adams. That said, they also beat the Bulldogs twice and took down the Highlanders for a doubleheader split. They also swept Ford to keep pace atop the MAC Red.

As previously mentioned, they play Stevenson this week.

4. Romeo Bulldogs (15-2, no change)

Romeo is the last of four county teams that can be considered elite to this point. At 15-0 against every team not called Dakota, they’ve been something of an unexpected buzzsaw, most recently earning DH sweeps against Port Huron Northern and Stoney Creeks along with a MAC Red sweep against Eisenhower. Nick Kaminski has been a breakout star, serving as one of their best starters — he was the starter in their one win over Dakota — and a force in the middle of the lineup, having both a grand slam and a three hit day in two of their victories over Ike.

5. Lutheran North Mustangs (11-1, up four)

Whether it’s a breakout or they’re just doing what they knew they could all along, Lutheran North has somewhat sneakily been one of the best teams in the county all season.

It’s been especially impressive since their last ranking two weeks ago, going 7-1 in that span with seven-straight wins after a loss to Divine Child.

Among some of their top contributors has been leadoff-hitting shortstop Lucas Mackenzie, who helped jump-start a recent 7-4 win over Father Gabriel Richard with a 3-for-3, 2-run, 1-RBI outing.

6. Chippewa Valley Big Reds (9-6, up one)

The Big Reds did well to steal a game in their series against Stevenson, getting a huge start from Landon Simpson to shut the Titans out in the last match of their three-game set.

They then turned around to win one and tie another in a weekend doubleheader against Armada — another good team that’s right on the cusp of the top 10.

At 3-3 in the MAC Red, they’re coming up on a big three-game set against Eisenhower who, at 0-6, has had a rough go in league play so far this season. Getting three wins would keep them in the race at the top of the division.

7. Anchor Bay Tars (7-6, down two)

The Tars did well to sweep Grosse Pointe North and take two out of three from L’Anse Creuse North, but their one loss to the Crusaders — a 1-0 final — was the team’s only league win so far.

It’s not damning to AB, but it’s something that elite teams don’t have happen.

Anchor Bay now faces a huge MAC White series against league co-favorite Grosse Pointe South.

8. Richmond Blue Devils (11-4, down two)

The only real slip-ups that the Blue Devils have seemingly had so far came against BWAC and Macomb County rival Armada, who, if this list went to 11 teams, just might be here.‘

Richmond got their best win to date on Saturday when they took down Livonia Franklin, 8-5.

They’ve also taken down the top two teams in the MAC Gold, Cousino and Marine City, and beaten both Cardinal Mooney and Algonac.

9. Ford Falcons (9-6, down one)

Ford came close to earning a signature win last week, but five unearned runs in the ninth inning against Dakota cost them the game and resulted in a series sweep. They also lost two of three to Chippewa Valley, but outside of those five losses, they’re 8-1 against everyone else, which includes L’Anse Creuse North, Utica, Trenton and Gibraltar Carlson.

10. Lakeview Huskies (10-4, new to rankings)

Lakeview wasn’t even up for consideration two weeks ago in our rankings.

They’ve since gone on a six-game winning streak, which includes a pair of wins over Armada — one of which was a 15-0 crushing in which the Huskies compiled 16 hits, including three apiece from Brennan Owsley, Gage Hall and Blake Moseley.
