Brody Kelsey is finding his stride again.
The Eisenhower sprinter, who’s working through a hamstring injury, won the 100-meter dash at the Barnyard Invitational and Elite Mile Showcase at Romeo on Friday, a performance that was encouraging for the junior.
“I’m just getting back into it, figuring it all out,” Kelsey said.
Kelsey finished in 11.44 seconds as he raced for the first time this season against automatic timing.
A headwind made it difficult for the competitors.
“I’m disappointed with my time, but you can’t do anything about the elements,” Kelsey said. “I wanted to come out and do the best I could.”
Kelsey’s best time last season was 10.99 at the Macomb County Invitational.
This year, he has 10.7 on his mind.
“That’s my goal,” he said.
If he posts that time in an approved meet, then Kelsey will qualify for the state Division 1 championship meet. The Michigan High School Athletic Association has changed qualifying rules; athletes who meet standards can qualify for the finals prior to regionals. In the past, only regional performances counted. The early qualifying time for the 100 in Division 1 is 10.95.
“If I get it, I get it,” Kelsey said, “but my goal is to get the times where I want them to be throughout the season and work with that.”
If they don’t reach EQ standards, then athletes can still qualify for the finals at regionals by finishing first or second or hitting additional qualifying marks set by the MHSAA.
The AQ time in the 100 is 11.10.
“I’m looking to go all-state this year,” Kelsey said.
The Barnyard Invitational was an EQ-approved meet, and several athletes had qualifying performances. Lightning interrupted the meet while heats for the 1600 were in progress.
The long jump was won by a pair of Utica athletes — sophomore Mackenzie Lindquist (15-3) and senior Jonathan Carter (20-8).
Other winners from Macomb County included Annie Hrabovsky of Romeo in the 3200 (10:52.86) and Luke Bowman of Anchor Bay in the adaptive 100.
Romeo’s 400 and 800 relay teams finished first.
