A Homer Glen man convicted of trying to hire someone to kill his then-wife will spend 30 years in jail.

Will County Judge Daniel Rozak in March found Robert Gold-Smith, 54, guilty of solicitation of murder. Gold-Smith, a former attorney, faced 20 to 40 years in prison.

Rozak Wednesday said he believed Gold-Smith, a former attorney, posed a great danger to his ex-wife, Victoria Smith. Gold-Smith was initially jailed after he struck his then-wife outside divorce court in 2010. While in the county jail, prosecutors said Gold-Smith tried to hire another inmate to kill Smith.

“Given the opportunity he will pose a great danger to Victoria Smith,” Rozak said, pointing to findings from clinical experts. “He would be very likely to re-offend.”

Gold-Smith, who represented himself during trial and at the sentencing, has been critical of prosecutors and Rozak and has described himself as a “stellar citizen.”

Rozak, however, pointed to medical reports showing Gold-Smith often blamed others for his problems.

Gold-Smith plans to file a motion requesting Rozak reconsider his sentence.
