A man initially suspected of trying to lure a teenage girl into his car in Tinley Park is not being charged, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Police had previously reported that, on Oct. 2, a man had tried to convince a 17-year-old girl to get into his car in the 17200 block of Oak Park Avenue.

In a news release issued at that time, police said the man pulled up to her in a parking lot and asked if she needed a ride, telling her she looked like she could use company.

The man left and headed north on Oak Park Avenue once he realized the girl was trying to get his license plate information, police then said.

Using her phone, the girl snapped a grainy picture of the car and provided it to police, which distributed it along with the news release to local media on Oct. 4. The man saw the image of his car in one of the media reports and within the last few days went to Tinley Park police to give his side of the story, according to Deputy Chief Charles Faricelli.

After talking with the man, investigators didn't believe it was “a luring-type thing” and didn't believe there was enough evidence to support bringing criminal charges against him, Faricelli said. Police then conveyed this to the girl and her family, he said.

Faricelli said he was not certain what the man told investigators about the incident but that there was possibly a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of what was said between him and the girl.
