It’s been 150 years since Frederick Sanders Schmidt (aka Fred Sanders) opened his first chocolate shop in Detroit, and Sanders candy is celebrating the milestone with two birthday party events.
Both will feature the sweet treats that have been made since 1875 and an opportunity for guests to share stories about their experience with the beloved brand.
One event — weather permitting — will be held at its factory and store in Clinton Township at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The event will combine the birthday celebration with the monthly Car Cruise-In, and will feature classic cars, music and food. Come early as the first 100 guests will receive a free gift of Sanders candy. A special birthday cake sundae will be on sale and a raffle will be held with the winner receiving $150 worth of Sanders products. The classic car voted “Top Pick” will also receive $150 worth of Sanders goodies along with a trophy.
Also celebrating the birthday Thursday will be the Sanders store in downtown Rochester. Sanders’ special birthday cake sundae will also be on sale and early birds attending this party will also receive a free gift of Sanders candy.
“I worked here when I was young,” said Robin Kleiner of Shelby Township, while peering through the glass windows overlooking the factory in Clinton Township where the famous chocolate is made. “It was my first job. I loved it.’
“I got free tastes,” she added.
Joining Kleiner was Sherrie Halanski, who remembers her children selling Sanders candy for a school fundraiser. The kids and their parents were also given a tour of the factory — which to the delight of every child included a free sample.
“It’s really a great Michigan brand,” said Halanski, who gifted her daughter-in-law’s parents in Massachusetts with a jar of Sanders Hot Fudge. “They never heard of it.”
Ashley Carter-Agnello knows exactly why Kleiner loved her job.
“I started here in 2017 and left, but I came back,” said the shift leader. “I love interacting with people and it’s just a great place to work.”
Carter-Agnello said a good part of her day is not only serving customers but listening to them.
“I enjoy hearing their stories,” she said. “It’s interesting to hear how this company has impacted their lives.”
As for the favorite treat of all time? That’s hard to say because every generation had one.
“Right now salted caramels are one of our bigger sellers,” he said.
